History of the PCA-Useful and Necessary beyond the PCA

What has happened in history never stays in the past. It echos and ripples and reverberates throughout time. That sounds cliche for two, legitimate reasons. 1) I am an average writer who is being somewhat lazy and, more importantly, 2) it is just plain true. History repeats itself and we are doomed to repeat our past if we don't learn from it and etc, etc.
Our history is important. And before you look at a work about the foundation of the PCA and think it has no edifying benefit outside of that denomination, do not forget how universally sinful we humans are and how hopelessly unoriginal we tend to be. The failures and flaws that led to the formation of the PCA (as well as the failures and flaws within the process of formation and the years since) can be found in many (if not all) Christian denominations, churches, individual lives.
The evolution of the Protestant liberal, a regression to a virtually Scripture-less, authority-less, Gospel-less, authority-less, Christ-less, "do good and be good"ianity, is a danger to be guarded againstt by all Christians. The emergence of the PCA is an example of a rejection of this regression. In that sense, Lucas's history of the PCA offers a service to the church at-large.
But the primary ministry of this book will be to Christians more closely associated with the PCA. As someone brand-new to the PCA (and presbyterianism in general), I benefitted greatly from this work. This is a detailed historical work that was not necessarily written for a PCA-novice like me. But, purposely or providentially, Lucas writes in a way that has great depth but does not leave the uninitiated gasping in the wake.
History texts, for me, are generally vegetables. You consume them more out of necessity than for pleasure. They are not as pleasant to the pallette as a sweet dessert or as fun to chew on as a perfectly grilled steak. And sometimes you get a turnip. :-( But a good cook can present vegetables in a way that makes them the star of a meal. "Yes, banana pudding sounds great, but is there anymore broccoli?" Ok, so maybe that doesn't happen all that often at the supper table, but For a Continuing Church is a history book that provides nutrion and pleasure. It deserves a spot in seminary, church, and personal libraries (and it deserves a printing in hardback!). I would have loved to see a full timeline included of the key events.
If you are a history buff or PCA minister, grabbing a copy of this is a nobrainer. But I would encourage all PCA members and people interested in the ebb and flow of Christian life at a macro level to give this a read as well.

2. I went into this work with just north of 0% knowledge of the history of PCA. I am certain, as with any history text, that there are many who will criticize the content of this work. I am not in a position to do that. As far as this volume goes, I commend it for a number if reason. First, the presentation. It is immensely approachable. Second, Lucas's credentials as an historian and the preponderance of citations make me have a good bit of faith in the content. Third, Lucas,from all indications, is a man of character who loves the Lord and desires to serve the church. I have no reservations taking For a Continuing Church to be an accurate assessment of the formation of the PCA and feel comfortable encouraging others to do likewise.

A Fascinating Record of a Necessary Leaving With Tears!

When a denomination departs from orthodoxy, the unity has been broken by the denomination, not by those who then leave it to remain faithful! That principle sums up the reasons for the formation of the PCA when it was formed by the withdrawing of many congregations from the mainline Southern Presbyterian Church. Sean Lucas has done a wonderful job of recording the trends, people, and events in the 20th century that led to the formation of the (now) largest evangelical Presbyterian denomination in America. Using a large of amount of original source material, especially articles from the Southern Presbyterian Journal/Presbyterian Journal and correspondence between some of the key players involved, Lucas successfully shows the true background of the formation of the PCA. His account is fair and even-handed. He does not whitewash the mixed motives of some of the conservatives for their leaving the PCA, but neither does he criticize their decision to leave. I think the best praise I can give is that I believe that since the author was so committed to using the correspondence and journal editorials & articles to tell the story, that the people involved in the narrative (living and now with their Lord) would acknowledge the fairness and accuracy of the way they are portrayed. A commitment to the Reformed Faith, the Scriptures, and the Great Commission were clearly at the heart of the reasons for the formation of the PCA. But, Lucas also shows, in their own words, that often these pure motives were uncritically mixed with discomfort over racial integration, fears of the mixing of races, and rabid anti-communism. So again, Lucas gives a fair picture, not a hagiography for the denomination he serves in!
Reading this work gave me both joy and sorrow. The joy was in seeing how the Lord arranged the formation of the PCA despite many obstacles and various personalities at work. I have been in the PCA for over twenty years now first as a member, and now as a pastor, and I am encouraged at how far the Lord has brought this denomination from such humble beginnings. There is also sorrow to see the downfall of the mainline church, through erosion of Biblical authority, orthodox doctrine and diluting of missions and evangelism as a result of the downplaying of Scripture. You can sense the frustration and the struggles that the PCA founders (and some who remained in the PCUS) had as they saw their beloved denomination systematically undermine and eliminate the Biblical truths it had been founded on.
Even if you are not a Presbyterian, this is a fascinating work of history, a story of the cultural and theological struggles of the 20th Century in American, and a vivid picture of what happens to a denomination when it abandons Biblical truth as it's authority and turns to culture and the wisdom of man. If you are Presbyterian, especially if you are in the PCA, this is a must-read to understand where our denomination came from, and why it exists. If you are a seminary student interested in ordination in the PCA, you absolutely must read this to be prepared for your Presbytery exams. It also helps give understanding for why the PCA works (and doesn't work!) as it does. I am glad for this book's publication and I pray that it gets a wide readership.
Those who do not learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them, but I pray that works like this one will remind believers that truth matters, doctrine matters, and getting the Gospel right matters! Dr. Lucas records, that in February of 1973, many of the conservative Presbyterians on the Steering Committee for the launching of the PCA attended a rally of the NPRF (National Presbyterian and Reformed Fellowship), and they heard Dr. Francis Schaeffer say this: "When it is no longer possible to practice discipline in the church courts, then you must practice discipline in reverse and leave. But your leaving must be with tears, not with flags flying and bands playing." (Lucas, pg. 304). I am grateful for the men who risked, sacrificed, and led with tears, to bring the PCA into existence, for God's glory and His Gospel!
