About the Author

Michael Parkin is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Economics at the University of Western Ontario, Canada. Professor Parkin has held faculty appointments at Brown University, the University of Manchester, the University of Essex, and Bond University. He is a past president of the Canadian Economics Association and has served on the editorial boards of the American Economic Review and the Journal of Monetary Economics and as managing editor of the Canadian Journal of Economics. Professor Parkin’s research on macroeconomics, monetary economics, and international economics has resulted in over 160

publications in journals and edited volumes, including the American Economic Review, the Journal of Political Economy, the Review of Economic Studies, the Journal of Monetary Economics, and the Journal of Money, Credit and Banking. He became most visible to the public with his work on inflation that discredited the use of wage and price controls. Michael Parkin also spearheaded the movement toward European monetary union. Professor Parkin is an experienced and dedicated teacher of introductory economics.

IF YOU WANT A TEXTBOOK THAT WILL TELL YOU WHO TO VOTE FOR

In my 25 years of teaching I have never seen a text that is as relentlessly biased as this one. Near the final chapters we are told, on the sacrosanct authority of the Washington Times, that Obama's programs have been an unalloyed failure unlike the supply side magic of Reagan. On page after page he cleverly, many times not so cleverly, conceals any point that would stand in the way of his Friedmanesque campaign. When his argument stumbles on the 2008 crisis he largely ignores it. It is this sort of analytic Econ 101 neo-classical orthodoxy that motivates the bigotry of so many who get just a little bit of college and believe that science shows us that anyone who dissents is either irrational or dishonest.

About the Author
William A. McEachern began teaching large sections of economic principles shortly after joining the University of Connecticut, and a several years later he began offering teaching workshops around the country. The University of Connecticut Alumni Association conferred on him its Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award in 2000. He earlier won the Association's award for Distinguished Public Service. Professor McEachern has published books and monographs on public finance, public policy, and industrial organization. His research has also appeared in edited volumes, such as READINGS IN PUBLIC CHOICE ECONOMICS (University of Michigan Press), INTERNATIONAL HANDBOOK ON TEACHING AND LEARNING ECONOMICS (Edward Elgar Publishing), and RETHINKING ECONOMIC PRINCIPLES (Irwin Publishing), and in a variety of refereed journals, including ECONOMIC INQUIRY, NATIONAL TAX JOURNAL, QUARTERLY REVIEW OF ECONOMIC AND BUSINESS, JOURNAL OF INDUSTRIAL ECONOMICS, KYKLOS, ECON JOURNAL WATCH, and PUBLIC CHOICE. He is the founding editor of THE TEACHING ECONOMIST, a newsletter that for more than two decades has focused on teaching economics at the college level. excellent textbook - won't buy it from amazon again

This is a text book that had to have. I do like the format, the review pages, and the low cost. However, I won't buy a textbook from Amazon again. It took almost three full weeks to get it on the FREE super saver (5-8 days shipping). They don't tell you that they don't have the book and it may take another 5-8 days before they get it so they can ship it to you. I lamost flunked out of the class waiting for the book.

Five Stars!

I received the book right on time. It was packaged fairly decently. The book itself is readable. The chapters get right to the point. It's written in plain English with no hard to understand terms and definitions. The pull out cards are a great reference tool and sum up the chapters nicely. Five stars!

Good text

This textbook is good for learning microeconomics on your own. I used it for an Internet class, and I did fine. The textbook is not complicated, but I am a mechanical engineering student, so it could be my experience with math and physics texts that affects this. My class only covered to chapter 17, so I can't write about the rest of the chapters; they are probably good as well.

This book provides an introduction to economics, an intro. to the market system, it covers the market structure and pricing (monopolies, perfect competition, etc.), resource markets, market failure and public policy, and international microeconomics.

The book also comes with note cards for each chapter. New textbooks (or used if the access code was not used I think) also provide Internet extras like quizzes and videos.

The one thing I did not like was the many and sometimes too large pictures. It seemed as a way to keep your attention on the book, but students reading this material should be mature enough to not require such things. It reminded me of a high school or middle school textbook; not the material, but the pictures.

But as I said, this is a good text.

W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was an English novelist and playwright. Maugham was famous as a dramatist before he was known for his novels and short stories. His clarity of style, the perfection of his form, and the subtlety of his thought, thinly veiled by a worldly cynicism made him an international figure. Among his novels are Of Human Bondage, The Moon and Sixpence, and The Razor's Edge.

One gem and five lumps of coal

"Orientations" may not be Maugham's first book of stories but it is very early and he had definitely not found his voice as a writer. There are five very bad stories and one excellent one. I hate to say this, as I am a serious fan of Maugham, based on his later novels, such as "Of Human Bondage and "Moon and Sixpence," his Ashenden stories and his essays in "The Vagrant Mood." I read Ted Morgan's biography and I just downloaded the rest of his novels and essays, which I'm eager to read.
But "Orientations" can only be recommended to completists and scholars. The five bad stories appear to have been written by an adolescent with no knowledge of the world that grownups really live in. The long smooth sentences and the latinate vocabulary show an expensive education but can't hide the juvenile conception and mediocre execution. These are the kind of stories that secondary students would publish in their school literary magazines, if their secondary school happened to be Eton. Three of the stories are set in Spain, but it is the Spain of magazine clichés and fantastic tales, of the kind that Poe, Hawthorne and even Edith Wharton could dash off in an afternoon. Another story, about two straight-laced English art lovers in France, takes a very long time to reach the obvious conclusion. There is a story about a clerk who gets religion, but it is as flat as the protagonist and his wife, who never acquire a 3rd dimension. In one of the other stories a monk loses his faith and there is no reason for the reader to care.
The last story though, "Daisy", is the real deal, or the real Maugham. Here his mature voice sounds loud and clear. (Spoiler follows) Set in an English village, it tells the story of a lower middle class girl whose father sees that she gets more education than her stupid mother feels is proper. Disaster strikes when Daisy runs off with a soldier. She sinks as low as possible and is disowned and ostracized. That would be the end of the tale in a normal Victorian or even Edwardian story, but the God the villagers worship decides not to play by the rules they expect him to and Daisy rebounds with miraculous good fortune, while her pious family begin a slow descent towards poverty. The characters of Daisy, her father and mother come to life on the page and they become people we know. The villagers are caricatures, but they provide a Greek chorus to remind you that this story is going the wrong way. Maugham drops the authorial commentary and digressions of the other stories and his ironic sympathy shines clearly through simple yet highly polished prose. The is the Maugham who wrote the later masterpieces. The other five stories are just wrong turns that he took on the way to discovering himself as a writer. You would be wasting your time to read them. You have been warned.

Somerset Maughan at some of his best!

This is a small but really good collection of some of Maughan's short stories. Written in his special style, the stories are an interesting read, and represent great examples of his art.

Anyone who LOVES Jokes ...and everybody does, THIS IS A MUST HAVE BOOK

I have done more Laughing throughout the book and now I have alot of Jokes to tell at parties. This is a Collection of the funniest jokes I have ever read.Im buying alot of copies for all my friends birthdays a great gift, LAUGHTER is the best medicine.

A few gems, but a lot of these jokes you probably heard before.

This book almost like a history lesson in how comedians use to perform, with no passion or real life experience that you can relate to just empty jokes. This book is more for you're parents and I'm sure they will even recognize or have even used material in this book back when they were younger, "What do you call 500 politicians and a group full of lesbians? A group of people who don't do d**k". See what I mean? dated material and you probably figured out the punchline before the joke was even finished. The jokes in the book are pretty much bits from comedians old sets. Joan Rivers does a joke about her sagging breast in this book and that same joke was used on the show 'Louie' starring her. So the material in here sometimes feels like throw away or recycled goods. The author believes the old school way of telling jokes is dead because of how PC America has become. Which could be true but at the same time that style of humor is dated, and cant compete with the short attention span of human beings now a days who are heavily distracted by technology. There is some funny stuff in here but its pretty rare. I think whoever edited this book relied to much on shock value rather than just capturing comics telling a good joke.

This is a super funny book that will keep you laughing from cover to cover. Filthy, Funny, and Totally Offensive Jokes is a classic and is a must read for anybody that loves really edgy comedy. Jeffrey Gurian and Tripp Whetsell have gone all out and this book is simply hilarious.

Este libro contiene infinidad de datos estadísticos sobre lo que significa ser clase media en México.

La clase media es definida por las aspiraciones de los individuos y cómo estas se reflejan en sus patrones de consumo : mejor educación, mejores servicios médicos, viajes , más consumo en entretenimiento, etc . Estas aspiraciones consisten en subir en la escala social mediante méritos conquistados ( meritocracia) en lugar de derechos heredados (como pueden ser aquellas familias que heredan trabajos de gobierno) .

Ser clase media tiene más que ver en cómo se vive, que con cuánto se gane, siempre y cuando esos ingresos cubran las necesidades básicas y exista un excedente para cubrir estas aspiraciones. Es decir puede haber personas que ganen como clase media y vivan como pobres, debido a sus hábitos de consumo (sí, conozco varios casos así).

Combining oral histories of Chemawa alumni with archival records of campus life, the book examines the prominent forms of music making at Chemawa—school band, choirs, private lessons, pageants, dance, garage bands, and powwows. Parkhurst traces the trajectory of federal Indian policy, highlighting students’ creative responses and the ways in which music reveals the inherent contradictions in the U.S. government’s assimilation practices.

Graham Cooke is so insightful! I received this book for Christmas & I have been reading & rereading it. Following every entry, you find blank pages that can be used to write your thoughts or just ignored. I am highlighting & jotting down my initial thoughts & will go back later to process. One of the recent things I read that really hit me, "Before we choose an action, we have already chosen a thought" "How we think about ourselves dominates our behavior(Proverbs 23:7) and sets our agenda in life towards other people."....."The reason we are in our current position is always our thinking. Our thinking brought us here; and it must therefore take us out and onward. If all our thinking has brought us to a place we don't like, then surely it is time for a better thought!"
It is thought provoking.....sometimes we know things but need to be reminded of them especially when we haven't totally applied them in our lives.
