I want Volume II..!

A textbook, hummmm...NO, that is not fair, for most textbooks are written by people who must sell you a chair in their classroom rather than give you a book that teaches one anything! THIS book teaches and it does it as if your very LIFE depended on it! It is imminently readable and filled with proper regard for a broad range of learners. Yes, you should not be an absolute novice - that is, having never seen a computer - BUT, if you can read and will put in the time to embrace painful study - you will use this book and all that it says. There is no waste or filler in this book! Mike Ash wrote this book as if he wanted to prove to the world that one does not have to compromise quality to promote Mac/App programming to worlds of users who may not have been born programmers (or are just being born!), and who are trying to make superior, high quality, money-making apps.The text is SLAMMED full of legible real world, best-used, examples with a gifted mind suggesting various 'other uses' for code improvement and dangers. It is a recipe book for solutions. The organization and textual clarity is truly superb. It shows mastery of the app writing process and a mature app problem solving mind-set: OUT-FREAKING-STANDING!!
NEGATIVE(S) found a microscopic smudge of dirt on the lower left corner of the 200th page...(oops, they may have been my eggs benedict..).AND...can't find volume II of this book - fast enough! I wish I could somehow 'subscribe' to this author... 'nuff said.

I've been a long-time reader of Mike's blog, and have the electronic version of this book. It is an incredible compendium of Mac and iOS programming (and of just general programming). There are few books where you can learn at the feet of a master on top of his game. This is one of them. Sometimes I just scrub to a random location and end up learning something new.

Rather than simply regurgitating the details of the most popular networking protocols, the authors of this book emphasize the fundamental concepts and theory of networking. These fundamentals lay the groundwork for understanding the details of standard protocols or even writing proprietary protocols. Current protocols are also explained, but by explaining communications in general rather than focusing on specifics, this book lays the foundation of understanding future networks as well as present ones.

Author, church leader and professor of English literature at three Christian universities for over three decades, Dr. Tippens is the provost of Pepperdine University where he also serves as professor of English literature. Keep reading it gets better

This book is well written and well researched. It contains many quotes from historical figures, Christians and philosophers (while this makes it "well-rounded" it can also make the book a bit high-brow in places. The book challenges the reader to consider what it means to be a christian in a variety of life situations. Although my initial impression was that is was a book about spiritual disciplines, it turned out to be more about Christian attitudes. I read and discussed this with a friend and we agreed that the 2nd half of the book is more interesting and engaging than the first...so hang in there, it's worth it.

Awesome Book

This book is a very practical look at being sincere and genuine with God and with our Christian family in sharing the narrow path of Christianity. I would very strongly recommend this book for anyone, or for any small bible study group that is interested in being more sincere in pursuing Christianity together.

Compelling read

Christian Americans are hungry for a new spirituality, not the same old religion of their parents. The Pilgrim Heart offers a "new" take on Christianity by focusing on the oldest traditions of the religion, the ways that Jesus actually lived His word in the world. Darryl Tippens calls Christians to practice simple daily applications of Jesus' word. By living every day as Jesus did, Tippens hope to bring a renewed community spirit to contemporary Christianity.

One of the most compelling sections discusses forgiveness. Tippens reminds us of Jesus' prayer spoken from the cross, forgiving his ultimate persecutors and calls Christians to exhibit this same level of forgiveness. This is especially difficult in this age of dissolving families, revenge, retaliation and the war on terrorism. The author also expresses the importance of forgiving one's self as this is what Jesus expects of Christians as well, to try again, to make amends, to keep moving forward on the path.

Tippens make this book accessible to readers by providing countless examples of people fulfilling these everyday practices of Jesus. Though some of the references can sometimes feel overly heady, there are enough simple examples that make the message clear to readers. However, some of the author's suggestions feel overly simple, full of platitudes without enough direction as to how to implement the practices.

Incredible and timely help

What a refreshing reconsideration of dating.
Many years ago when my daughter was still young I began to forge an idea of how we would approach dating. Something in me told me the way our churches were doing things was not right; there were just way too many cases of moral failure taking place. After some time and prayer I decided that our children were not going to play the 'dating game.' That is where our kids get in trouble. There were things that I felt but could not quite articulate. This good book filled the gap.
The advice given in this book is practical, reasonable and enlightening. It helps the reader understand why it is so easy for kids to end up in sexual trouble before they realize what is happening. It also can help parents set guidelines that will assist a young person in making good mature decisions.
I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to raise morally pure young people. Don't wait though! Get started now and began developing these ideas in your children while they are young and before they approach that age of 'awakening.'

In a very positive manner, the power of touch in male-female relations, and the power of "cherishing touch" and saving it for marriage is explained. For those who have made mistakes in the past there is hope, and for those who already are living this way, they will be reassured that they are not alone, and their resolve will be strengthened. Bad Haircut was not quite what I expected. It was about a certain time and place and I didn't find a lot to relate to; but it was well written and amusing in places. Not nearly as interesting as Little Children, which was probably written at a more mature point in the author's life.

Not highly recommended

I did not care for this book. The beginning was ok, and the idea was ok. But nothing else really did anything for me. We have Beth who is a 24 year old virgin. She just happens to get the chance of a life time, when shes asked to write a story about the porn industry. And this is where some of my issue begins. Beth who is a "very talented author" doesnt feel she can write said story due to being a virgin. Now add Rick, who is literally a man whore, not just a porn star. He is literally adding tattooed "notches" on his back. As the author points out over and over 199 of them to be exact. I think it would have helped a little is this had not been pointed out over and over. Now Beth decides to try to write the story, and is interviewing Rick. Rick is quick to point out his tattoos, and Beth is insulted and leaves. Then apologizes for being insulted, and over sensitive! Why? They aqree to meet and try again. So this time he pulls her right into the middle of a porn filming.... And she kisses him! After not speaking for a few days due to the embarrassment, Beth then asks "Thick Rick" the porn star to TRAIN and TEACH her! She was described as a really strong intelligent woman yet I did not get that impression at all. I think this quote about sums up the whole book for me... Rick," Her nipples could take more abuse than a supermarket cart." Really? (For the record not specifically a BDSM.)

A male porn star and a virgin reporter = a recipe for disaster.

Bethany is a "struggling" writer. She writes freelance for a paper, while struggling to finish her book. A great writer who has a road block in terms of writing the emotional sex scenes. With a decent paycheck promised, Beth sets out to write about the porn industry though the eyes of a virgin.

Rick, or Thick Rick (yeeeaaahhh lol), is the typical male pornstar. A huge ego that is only superseded by his rather sizable appendage. He maneuvers through life with very little emotion. Beyond adding another notch on his porn belt, so to speak, there is not much appeal to Thick Rick and that's the way he liked it.

Or, so he thought, until he met Bethany. Bethany proposition him to be the one to introduce her to all things sexual. What they got in return, however, was inevitably falling into a relationship neither of them were ready for.

Would Bethany be able to put her prejudice against the porn industry aside to be with the man, and not the porn star persona? Would Thick Rick be able to leave his porn dealings behind?

I received this book as an ARC and thoroughly enjoyed the book. This is not just a wham-bam, thank you Ma'am story line. This is not about a prudish mid twenties young woman who scorned all things intimacy. This is a journey of two people discovering more about themselves. A journey that would be a lot less interesting had they not been who they were.

I discovered Elliot Kane through Davida Lynn. I look forward to reading more books from the both of them.

An Intriguing Storyline

I didn't know what to expect from a romance with the male character being a porn star. It definitely is a new storyline for me.

I have to say that I really enjoyed the story that the authors have released. Beth is a reporter asked to do a story about the porn industry and do something new with the topic. She is very unsure and out of her element. Beth is a virgin and not even familiar with porn.

Rick starts off as a stereotype. He is the porn star who goes to the bar to pick up women all the time. He doesn't do relationships. He even keeps a record of his conquests using tattoo marks. He loves sex and makes no apologies for his work or his play. Beth intrigues him and their first meeting does not go well.

When they engage in a sexual relationship, the story really gets interesting. Rick instructs her on all aspects of sexual play and does not rush the process. There are some very sexually charged scenes. There is also the question of whether he can have something real as long as he continues to work in the industry in porn.

I really enjoyed the story of these two very different people exploring and learning more about themselves as they become more intimate. It is an intriguing storyline and will definitely keep your interest.
