B.F. Skinner: A Reappraisal, by Marc N Richelle

B.F. Skinner died in August 1990. He had been praised as one of the most influential psychologists of the 20th century, but was also attacked by a variety of opponents within and outside the field of psychology. This introduction to his work is first of all a guide to a correct reading of his writings, a reading devoid of the distortions and misinterpretations often conveyed by many commentators, including psychologists. It frames Skinner's contributions with reference to major European traditions in psychological sciences, namely Pavlov, Freud, Lorenz and Piaget. Crucial aspects of Skinner's theory and methodological stands are discussed in the context of contemporary debates: special attention is devoted to the relationship of psychology with biology and the neurosciences, to the cognitivist movement, to the status of language and to the explanation of novelty and creativity in human behaviour.; Finally, Skinner's social and political philosophy is presented with an emphasis on the provocative aspects of an analysis of current social practices which fail to solve most of the urgent problems humankind is confronted with today. Both in science proper and in human affairs at large, Skinner's thought is shown to be not behind, as is often claimed, but ahead of the times, be it in his interactive view of linguistic communication, in his very modern use of the evolutionary analogy to explain the dynamics of behaviour, or in his vision of ecological constraints.

Outside the Skinner Box
By calmly
An exceptional book. Marc Richelle was a student of Skinner's (and Piaget's) and co-translated some of Skinner's works into French. He seems able to identify Skinner's mistakes but also to represent well Skinner's achievements.

One subject Richelle ventures into is why there were so many attacks on Skinner, often misrepresenting his positions badly and at time attacking him personally. In a chapter on language, Richelle considers the vicious attacks by Chomsky and how, by ignoring them, Skinner lost an opportunity to influence psycholinguistics.

Richelle's understanding of the "Skinner box" and "operant conditioning" are liberating. "Operant conditioning" may be misnamed, "operant learning" seems more accurate. Skinner may have needed to isolate rats in boxes so he could understand some basic principles of behavior, but even a rat, outside a box, displays a rich set of behavior which we can not predict. The box is a reflection of Skinner's limitation, that he could't grasp the full richness of our behavior or a rats, so he needed the help of the box and its simple environment for a while to get a start on how organism's behave. Skinner appreciated how rich the behavior of orgnanism is, but he also appreciated how much scientific understanding of how we behave could benefit us.

Richelle's discussion of Skinner's social concerns may be the strongest part of this book, as evidenced by Skinner's writings and inventions on education, by his concern for the plight of woman, and by his concern for all of us who have been duped into maintaining the status quo. Richelle shows how, seemingly paradoxicaly, the belief in our autonomy encouraged in us by controlling agencies like the government, works to keep us ineffective and under oppressive controls.

Would this book function well as an introduction to Skinner, as Richelle himself intended? Anyone, including a lay reader, might benefit from reading some of Skinner first, for example "Walden Two" or "Beyond Freedom And Dignity". But Skinner's ideas may seem too foreign without preparation by a good guide such as Marc Richelle. On the other hand, Richelle himself is fairly challenging. If you haven't read Skinner and are interested, I suggest you choose yourself whether to start with Skinner or Richelle. If your choice seems like tough reading, try switching to the other. One way or the other, getting to understand Skinner may be one of the best things you ever did for yourself. The more of us who have at least some scientific understanding of behavior, the better for all of us.

A European take on Skinner
By Jim Farmelant
Marc Richelle is a Belgian psychologist who studied in Geneva where, not surprisingly, he came under the influence of Piaget. However, as he began to read B.F. Skinner's work his viewpoint shifted towards radical behaviorism while still retaining a great respect for Piaget. His book, *B.F. Skinner: A Reappraisal*, is written as an evaluation of Skinner from the standpoint of a European psychologist, and he relates Skinner's work with that of such prominent European psychologists as Pavlov, Freud, Lorenz, Piaget, and Vygotsky. Richelle provides an overview of Skinner's career and how his views evolved over time. For those who are familiar with Skinner's work much of this should be familiar, but they still might learn a good deal from Richelle's comparison of Skinner to his European contemporaries. Richelle's evaluation of Skinner in reference to European psychology makes his book unique among the studies of Skinner's work.

Richelle sketches out Skinner's contributions to experimental methodology in psychology, including the invention of the Skinner box and the development of a research methodology based on single-organism experiments, as opposed to the traditional method of comparing experimental groups with control groups. He reviews Skinner's challenge to traditional S-R models of behavior, those psychologies that Skinner labeled methodological behaviorisms. Such psychologies include the behaviorisms of John B. Watson and Clark Hull as well as the cognitive school of psychology. For all these schools, psychology is in one way or another the science which attempts to understand behavior in terms of stimulus-response pairings. This is true even for the cognitivists, who differ only in that they posit intervening cognitive mechanisms between stimulus and response. Against these schools, Skinner posited his own radical behaviorism which centered around his conception of operant conditioning (a conception that owed much to the work of Thorndike on the Law of Effect). In his elaboration of operant mechanisms, Skinner proposed to understand the development of behavior in Darwinian terms - that is, the selection of responses by the organism's environment.

Richelle devotes one chapter to exploring Skinner's debt to Pavlov, which was certainly very large. Skinner borrowed much of his scientific vocabulary from Pavlov as well some of his methodology. However, contrary to Pavlov, Skinner contended that there were two types of conditioning rather than one: traditional Pavlovian conditioning (which he called respondent conditioning) and operant conditioning. Although both kinds of conditioning followed similar laws, there were also significant differences which required the use of different experimental methodologies. Skinner argued that the two types of conditioning had different neuroanatomical roots, with Pavlovian conditioning rooted in the autonomic nervous system and operant conditioning rooted in the somatic nervous system. This thesis was eventually refuted by Neal Miller in 1968 when he showed that, contrary to Skinner, autonomic responses could be operantly conditioned (1).

Concerning the influence of Pavlov on Skinner, Richelle concludes that, while large, it has been overstated by many commentators.

Richelle devotes a chapter to Freud in Skinner's writings. He notes that while Skinner was highly critical of Freud's mentalism, he had many kind things to say about Freud's work. Skinner admired Freud for being a determinist, for being an astute observer of human behavior, and for having discarded consciousness and introspection as tools for understanding mental processes. Freud was praised by Skinner for having shown that mental activity does not require consciousness and that many of the most important aspects of mental activity occur beyond its ken. Skinner saw much value in the concepts of Freudian defense mechanisms (i.e., repression, sublimation, projection, rationalization) which in *Science and Human Behavior* and *Verbal Behavior* he sought to show could be translated into the language of behaviorism.

Skinner also argued that Freud's modeling of human personality in terms of id, ego, and superego could be restated in terms of the various sorts of contingencies of reinforcement that control human behaviors. Thus the Freudian id was seen as corresponding to biologically based reinforcers and was responsible for behaviors that were ultimately reinforced by food, water, sexual contact and other primary biological reinforcers. The superego - the "conscience" of Judeo-Christian theology - was in turn responsible for the behaviors that control the id, using techniques of self-control that are acquired from the group. Id and superego inevitably clash, and their conflicts are in turn mediated by the ego, which besides attempting to reach a compromise between the id and superego also deals with the practical exigencies of the environment.

Richelle goes on to discuss Skinner and ethology, especially that of Konrad Lorenz. Skinner was often harshly critical of much of the work of the ethologists, including Lorenz, but he came to perceive the value of their work. He agreed with them concerning the necessity of applying a Darwinian standpoint to behavior (which meant understanding it in selectionist terms) but he faulted them for not making a clear distinction between different levels - the biological level, the behavioral level, and in humans the cultural level - to which a Darwinian analysis could be applied. (Interestingly, Skinner faulted the sociobiologists on similar grounds.) Skinner's comments on the three levels of selectionism is relevant to such matters as the debate over directionality in history which Robert Wright defends in his book *Nonzero* and which is also defended by Alan Carling from the standpoint of a selectionist Marxism (2).

Concerning Piaget, Richelle says that both Skinner and Piaget were largely ignorant of each other's work, a situation which he finds to have been understandable but somewhat regrettable, since in certain respects their perspectives were more complementary rather than antagonistic. Piaget's constructivism was explicitly developmentalist, an approach that Richelle sees Skinner as having under-emphasized. Also, Piaget's work was concerned with the development of the higher cognitive functions in humans, whereas Skinner's work tended to focus on those aspects of behavior that humans share with other species. But despite the fact that they came out of quite different psychological traditions, there were some underlying similarities, in Richelle's opinion. Both men attempted to take Darwinism seriously, which meant understanding behavior in evolutionist, selectionist terms. Skinner's emphasis on knowledge as action was surprisingly similar to Piaget's views. Richelle at one point compares quotations from Skinner and Piaget. From Skinner's *About Behaviorism* he quotes:

"Operant behavior is essentially the exercise of a power: it has an effect on the environment."

Likewise, Richelle quotes from Piaget's *Adaptation vitale et psychologies de l'intelligence*:

"The organism acts upon the environment, rather than being simply submitted to it. As to the highest levels, where behavior plays a non-negligible role, this role is by no means limited to compensate for alterations or aggressions from the environment: it may consist, on the contrary, in conquering actions aimed at extending the environment."

Richelle points out that for both Piaget and Skinner the emphasis in studying behavior was not on the stimulus, nor upon the mind, but rather upon action itself.

Richelle argues that Piaget's work on cognitive development could have benefited from a greater understanding of Skinner's work on operant learning since, like Skinner, he was committed to applying Darwinian analogies to the understanding of behavior. Skinner's analysis of operant conditioning could have helped Piaget to substantiate his thesis that evolution, or selectionism, is applicable to behavior on a multiplicity of levels.

Richelle only very briefly discusses the work of the Soviet psychologist Vygotsky, but he notes some similarities to Skinner, including the fact that both Vygotsky's psychology of activity and Skinner's radical behaviorism shared an emphasis on action as the focus for psychological study. They also shared similar views concerning the social origins of human self-awareness.

Richelle has a useful chapter on the Skinner-Chomsky debate in psycholinguistics. He agrees with Skinner that Chomsky fundamentally misunderstood Skinner's work, but he also faults Skinner for, among other things, neglecting the developmental dimension which Chomsky emphasized, for failing to respond to Chomsky's attacks, and for failing to engage the psycholinguists generally. However, Richelle discerns a tendency within psycholinguistics to move towards positions reminiscent of Skinner's without generally acknowledging the Skinnerian origins of the views that they are adopting.

The last few chapters of the book engage Skinner's views on education and society. Richelle generally endorses most of them with enthusiasm and he gives a good restatement of the arguments of *Beyond Freedom and Dignity*. Richelle reiterates Skinner's critique of "autonomous man" and how this notion, along with commonsense mentalistic psychology, performs an important ideological function: persuading people that they are free agents while concealing the existence of behavioral controls. This wouldn't be so bad, Richelle thinks, except that the types of behavioral controls in place have failed to solve our most important social problems. Therefore, Richelle agrees with Skinner that a challenge to the notions of autonomous man and mentalism is necessary if we are to make social progress.

One section of this chapter bears the heading "Mentalism as a Tool of Power," which sums up Richelle's (and Skinner's) point regarding control. Mentalism promotes the idea that the way toward change is to change people's minds or hearts, not the environmental conditions in which they live. This generally suits the dominant political and economic elites, since mentalism turns people's attention inwards, diverting them from perceiving the actual determinants of their lives, especially the more or less hidden behavioral controls. By positing a special freedom, the myth of autonomous man conditions the masses to blame themselves for their fate, and the status quo is thus rendered safe from questioning or modification. No surprise, then, that Skinner, even with Richelle's advocacy, is unlikely to catch on.

Looking Good
By Dr Jack L Edwards
Although I purchased the book as a reference text for a number of issues related to radical behaviorism, I have had a chance to look over several items in the book and have not been disappointed. Although much of Chomsky's criticism of Skinner's verbal behavior has been answered and Chomsky shown to be little more than a distraction, albeit for far too long, this book added to my insights over this controversy. There are many more issues covered in the book and I certainly recommend it as a reference on the variety of issues it covers.

The physical quality of the book itself could be better. I have a feeling that it won't sustain too many readings before it starts to come apart, but I could be wrong.

Chilling Arctic Thriller!!!
By Rob Weiner
This was Duncan Kyle's first book which got him onto the thriller scene. Reading 'A Cage of Ice' shows he came in with a bang. John Edwards, the main character, receives a mysterious package from the Soviet Union. Later the same day he is nearly killed by a car and his landlord is mugged for the keys to Edward's room. He is confused, not only because of the bizarre attacks but because the package is addressed to 'Professor Edward.' He is Dr. Edwards. The plot comes together quite nicely, and Dr. Edwards ends up on a mission through the Arctic. This thriller set the stage for Kyle's other books, and he went on to become the greatest thriller writer ever (in my eyes.)

STARTS OFF OK, and deteriorates steadily
By GBArg
I got thru this "thriller," after casting it aside a few times in frustration. Halfway thru the book the device of throw up a storm, find another anchor becomes glaringly apparent. I started wondering what was in the potboiler bag next to throw into the stew. On top of that the reference to the global warming hoax is tiresome. If you can stomach the result you MIGHT like the story. There isn't much in the way of likeability about the characters, tho.

Dealing with God's Problem Children
By James R. V. Matichuk
The church is full of difficult people. Often they don’t mean to be divisive, but pastors have to navigate power plays from lay leaders or other people opposed to the minister’s ministry philosophy. Differences in theological convictions can lead to mistrust and questioning of pastoral motives. Sometimes lay leaders have convictions about how to deal strongly with sin in the congregation without seeing the full picture that the pastor sees in confidential counseling sessions. This often means that when ‘dragons’ act to nip a problem in the bud, they cause undue hurt and consternation. Author Marshall Shelley calls these problem people, “Well-intentioned Dragons.” After all they aren’t trying to make life hell for those around them, but the end up causing much pastoral anxiety.

Ministering to Problem People in the Church helps pastors diagnosis problem people, set appropriate boundaries, create a culture of active lay participation and healthy leadership and confront these ‘dragons’ where necessary. Ministering to Problem People in the Church was originally published as Well-Intentioned Dragons. I actually read the earlier edition of this book and found it helpful of understanding the dynamics of fallen people in church. New to this edition was a chapter on electronic communication which gives pastors some principles for communicating well in a world of texts, email and social media (and not compounding problems!). Also Shelley has a chapter on dealing with those struggling with mental illness in the church, which is sensitive to the dynamics of treatment and affirms the full personhood of those who struggle without demonizing them.

I think Shelley’s shorthand of ‘well-intentioned dragons’ for difficult congregants is problematic (these are fellow image-bearers not mythical beasts) but he offers sound advice on how to navigate troubled waters. Despite the shorthand label, he advocates attempt to approach dragons with respect and understanding, sensitive to their past wounds. He also doesn’t think we are in the business of slaying dragons, but of winning them back to the body of Christ (following Matthew 18). So despite the nomenclature, Shelley humanizes God’s problem children in the church.

Another concern one might have while reading this book is, ‘what if the pastor is the the problem?” Spiritual abuse and clergy misconduct are real issues but that is beyond the scope of this book. Shelley assumes that the pastor is attempting to lead God’s people well. I would hate for abusive pastors to label all their opponents as ‘dragons’ as a way of silencing them, but that would be to ignore most of Shelley’s advice. But if you assume that this book is written to help pastors lead healthy congregations (which it was), and follow Shelley’s advice for creating a healthy leadership culture, their is little cause for concern here.

Pastors and ministry leaders will find in Shelley’s helpful advice for shepherding God’s people, especially when they find themselves at loggerheads with those they seek to lead. This will be much more helpful to the ministry practitioner (its intended audience) than the general reader. I give this book four stars.

Thank you to Bethany House Publishers for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Facing the dragons in the church
By Books Reviewed
In every church there are people who either intentionally or unintentionally make the lives of pastors and leaders difficult. These people create problems in all sorts of ways, and this book goes along way to identifying the problems, the people, and methods pastors can use to manage these issues.

The book was previously published under the title “Well-intended Dragons”, and has been revised and updated to deal with modern issues and trends, particularly concerning social media.

It identifies these "problem people" or dragons as the book refers to them, as people having the best intentions, but they often leave behind the most negative impressions of people and church life.

Dragons unintentionally, but with the best intentions, undermine the ministry of the church and make pastors question their calling.

Based on real-life stories of battle-scarred veterans, Marshall Shelley presents a clear picture of God's love for those on both sides of the problem.

The issue of dragons in the church is not an isolated one. One American leadership journal has found d that 80% of churches have dragons, and pastors devote significant time and energy to dealing with difficult people.

Shelly begins with several stories of complex issues that affect the church, illustrating the issues, pastors that have handled the situation well, as well as those who have handled it poorly, costing them jobs, careers, and caused church splits.

The book identifies a dozen different types of dragons: From the ‘Bird Dog’, who identifies items that need the pastor’s attention or action; the ‘Wet Blanket’ who attempt to stop any new activity or action, spreading discontent and minimising any enthusiasm for any initiative.

There is the ‘Entrepreneur’ who aims to further his business interest by networking throughout the church, particularly with new people; as well as the ‘Drill Instructor’ who takes on the role of commander and steamrollers everyone into their way of thinking.

The ‘Anonymous Blogger’ raises suspicion and dissatisfaction through posting comments in the name of trying to save the church; The ‘Financial Fickler’ uses money to influence church decisions, by giving or withholding funds.

The ‘busybody’ who tells others how to do their job; the ‘Sniper’ who influences others from afar; the ‘Bookkeeper’who records the
incorrect actions and words of the pastor; the ‘Merchant of Muck’ who draws others in with stories of problems in the church; and the ‘Legalist’ who lists the absolute do and don’ts for the church and pastor.

Further Shelly explores what it is that makes up dragons. Dragons are those with strong emotions and passions about something,
and they cannot overcome their human nature. Once the descent begins, personal attacks come fast and furious.

Most importantly, Shelly provides strategies to deal with a range of conflicts and dragons in the church. He elaborates in detail on strategies including building of a positive atmosphere; maximizing serving opportunities for members to reduce armchair critics; promote the values of the church; ensuring the pastor has outside interests and sharing these with the church, creating trust, and building a healthy board.

The book deals with electronic media, social media, and the dreaded email criticism, and how to respond in each circumstance.
Mental illness is covered, which is rarely discussed in the church community, and ideas on how to deal with an outburst during a
service.

Power plays by influential church members are dealt with, with examples illustrating what pastors have done badly, and ideas that
have worked well. Power plays and manipulation often occurs from long standing members, or major financial contributors, which creates conflict in itself.

Shelly goes beyond identifying the issues, to providing ideas of improving church health prior to issues, so that when dragons appear, they have difficulty gaining power.

Shelly deals with what to do when criticisms appear valid, how we can test their validity and humbly learn from them. He reinforces the view that it is not surrendering, but serving. The book explores the options of open confrontation, forgiveness, restoring relationships, and facing the possibility that in some situations there may be an impasse that can not be resolved at all. Shelly provides strategies for taming dragons, through changing your view of them. By changing your perspective from lions to wounded lambs, you change the way you deal with the person and the situation.

As a leader, I was encouraged by the real stories and direct recounts from others in ministry. To discover that they are not the only ones feeling under attack, and dealing with people who are hurting badly, while being hurt themselves. It reminds us that ministry is not for the faint-hearted. The stories provide us signs that we can learn from in our own situations.

This is a book that I have purchased for myself, and reflect over when I see the beginnings of dragons emerge. I recommend it for anyone in leadership or some form of ministry. This may be the book that saves you from the brink of quitting.

Good resource for those in Church Leadership
By Built By Story
Ministering to Problem People in Your Church by Marshall Shelley

Every organization seems to have at least one or two people who mean well but still manage to cause emotional strains. These people do not usually intend to cause problems, but sometimes they can derail the organization and cause stress for those in leadership positions. In this book (an updated version of the formerly released Well-Intentioned Dragons), Marshall Shelley reaches out to Pastors who may be dealing with these sorts of people. Shelley likes to refer to these people as well-intentioned dragons.

Though I am not a pastor, I was intrigued by the idea of this book. I’ve spoken with people and have read books and blogs by those who have been hurt by their time in the church. Sometimes the hurt comes from the church’s teaching or leadership styles. However, I have heard more and more people talk about they were hurt by others who attended the church, by ‘well-intentioned dragons’ who didn’t realize that their actions and words caused deep wounds. Dealing with ‘dragons’ is not easy. Often our default response to conflict is to avoid it, especially within the church.

Instead of ignoring the problem, Shelley hopes to show pastor’s techniques they can use. Woven into the book are stories about other pastors (important details being changed to protect privacy). We can see what problems began to arise in the church and how the pastor dealt with it. In some cases there is reconciliation and both the pastor the dragon come to an understanding. There are also stories where relationships fracture and either the pastor or the dragon ends up leaving the church.

I appreciate how Shelley handled the stories. When writing about people who can cause dissent and problems, it can be easy to demonize them and attack them. Instead, Shelley tries to show why the dissent began as well as showing what the pastors did right or wrong. Indeed, some of the pastors only realized afterward that their response only contributed to the problem. The book gives suggestions to pastors on how to approach people, how to handle criticism, and how to come to understand the dragon’s point of view.

After finishing the book, I could see why it was ripe for reprinting. A chapter titled ‘Electronic Warfare’ is brand new to the book but is an important section. It shows pastors ways to react to inflammatory or negative posts online or through email. He cautions pastors on being too reactionary with electronic communication, especially because it is too easy to misread context in emails or blog postings.

I believe this book can be an excellent resource for not only pastors, but for those in leadership positions at other Christian organizations. Many of the stories can not only be relevant but informative. Shelley’s insights are strong and seem well grounded and I’m sure there are many conflicts which may be helped after a reading of this book.
