Jeff Buckley: Mystery White Boy Blues, by Anthony Reynolds

Jeff Buckley’s doe-eyed good looks and exceptional musicianship made him a Gen X poster boy and the object of reverent admiration from rock’s aristocracy. His ethereal yet powerful voice forever changed the landscape of popular music, and his short but intensely lived life has crystallized into an enduring rock'n'roll legend. Jeff Buckley explores the rocker’s life and legacy in unprecendented detail. It recounts his self-described "trailer trash" upbringing and long years of hand-to-mouth struggle through his emergence as the most acclaimed singer/songwriter of the mid-1990s and the preliminary recording sessions for his never-completed second album. More than a decade after his tragic accidental death, Buckley’s myth has lost none of its potency. Steeped in melancholia and excess, his story is retold here through the memories of those who knew him best, making Jeff Buckley a captivating narrative of rock'n'roll dreams, burning ambition, and doomed youth.

Do we really need another Jeff Buckley book?
By Asgeir Notvik
the answer is no.

this book features almost nothing new to the myth that was Jeff Buckley. A couple of new interviews from some of his friends is the only thing worth buying this book, so if you're not a hardcore Jeff Buckley, i will rather recommend the detailed and much better written Dream Brother by Browne.

Great book about singer-songwriter by singer-writer
By J. Luis Salmeron Espinosa
I bought this book because I love the music Anthony Reynolds did with his band Jack, and the music he's doing now
(check out "British Ballads", the album he released last year).
I was intrigued about his prose, so I went for this book, and I have truly enjoyed it.
Many times, the first chapters of a biography can be quite boring. Kids are kids,
so the early stages of even a genius can be "too normal" to raise interest. But in this case the figure
of Tim Buckley comes to the rescue, and the author gives a very interesting vision on how little did Tim get to know about Jeff, how little time they shared,
but still how deep the bond between them was and how the ghost of his father would both guide and haunt Jeff.
The ammount of information, even about this teenage years, is overwhelming. Reynolds talked (literally) to everyone and their mothers.
By the time it gets to Jeff moving to New York, you're already hooked on it.
The description of the NY atmosphere in those days is fascinating,
the welsh humour breaking loose now and then
(like when he talks about Jeff's early band, Gods and monsters, saying that Jeff looked like "a God among monsters, or better yet, a prince among plumbers").
The chapters about Jeff signing to a major label and recording "Grace" are specially interesting. As an insider of that industry, and having compiled a huge
pile of data about gear, setlists, recording equipment and sessions, it seems no detail is left unexplained. Once again the battle between music itself
and music industry shows up and is soulfully described.
In the final chapters, the poetic prose raises to top heights, avoiding all trace of morbid details, just focusing on the vanishing of a pure soul
under a starry night.
Amusing, accurate, well documented and emotional.
A must, even if you're not a total fan of the young Buckley.

Not a sensationalistic bummer
By Fregeman
I was pleasantly surprised by this book, since the blurb on the back made it sound like it was going to be a sensationalistic bummer. That said, it doesn't offer much beyond what other biographies have covered. It's not a waste of time but it's not even remotely in the league of David Browne or Jeff Apter's contributions to the Buckley bibliography.

A great book for web developers to get up to speed with the new spec.
By Molly Rose
I can easily peg this book as a must-read for web designers and developers who wants to learn what HTML5 is and how to best use it. The HTML5 Cookbook is written in a Problem-Solution-Discussion pattern for each of its segments on a particular HTML5 feature, with plenty of references to external websites for more information and discussion. The segments are grouped in chapters that start with the most simple and common HTML features, to the most complex.

Here's a summary of each chapter, with my review and take-away for them:

Chapter 1: Fundamental Syntax and Semantics
This chapter focuses on the new tags and changes to existing tags in the HTML5 specification, like modifications to the doctype, script and link tags, and introducing nav, header, and footer tags. There are dozens of these, and the Cookbook lists them individually, with concise descriptions for each item.

Even though I was already familiar with most of the new tags and changes to syntax HTML5 provides, this chapter gave a lot of new information and insight about each one - the Cookbook cleared up some confusion I've had about the new article tag and section tag, and clarified how the HTML5 specification will affect accessibility and SEO.

Chapter 2: Progressive Markup and Techniques
This chapter explores more on semantics, markup styles, and browser compatibility. The discussion segments brings up Javascript fallbacks when a HTML5 feature isn't supported by a user's browser, and tools for analyzing your markup.

Chapter 3: Forms
HTML5 makes life easier for coding up forms, though many of these changes isn't fully supported yet. This chapter goes over the new form features and each features current support (at the time of the publication, at least), and for several features, screenshots on how they will appear in each major browser.

Honestly, in my studies in web design, I've skipped over the chapters or blog posts on HTML forms. I've found that subject to be complicated and boring. Though, the Cookbook's chapter on HTML5 forms made the subject considerably more informative and digestible. Many of the new form features even look fun to experiment with, though the lack of browser support would mean it'll be some time before I could safely use them in a practical website.

Chapter 4: Native Audio
Here, the Cookbook finally gets to a newly introduced HTML tag; . This chapter covers how the tag works, what audio files browsers recognize, attributes and functions that the audio tag uses, and related best practices tips. This is also the chapter where Javascript is first used in the Cookbook for enhancing and expanding the HTML5 functionality.

Native audio is one of the biggest of the new HTML5 features, and one of the least supported by the big browsers. The Cookbook does a satisfactory job of pointing out this, explaining it, and comparing which browsers does and doesn't support them (at the book's publication, at least). It was at this chapter that I've started having trouble with this book - the author throws out snippets of Javascript to use, apparently assuming the reader is already very familiar with reading Javascript and experienced with implementing it. I'm not, so I didn't understand what the Javascript was supposed to be doing.

Chapter 5: Native Video
This chapter is essentially the same as the previous chapter, but covering the tag. The attribute syntax between and is very similar, but there's still enough differences in functionaliy and support. The Cookbook does a good job with covering the features, uses, and support, like with chapter 4.

Chapter 6: Microdata and Custom Data
This chapter begins with a brief description and history of microformats and microdata - tag attributes and information for defining the content within them, for use with search engines and other systems. The recipe sections here introduces the "item" and "data" attributes, their uses, and some Javascript functions to make them useful in some applications.

The concept of microdata and custom data was pretty new to me, though I don't feel that I got a complete understanding of them through this chapter. The Cookbook was clear on what they are now for HTML5 (somewhat), though not as much as the whole picture of microdata. However, the chapter didn't try to do that; instead relying on it's nudging the reader to read more about it on Schema.org; a website the Cookbook referenced throughout the chapter.

Chapter 7: Accessibility
Web accessibility is a big and growing issue in web design, and this chapter covers how the HTML5 specification expands on existing tag attributes, like the "alt" for image tags, and introduces new attributes for making web accessibility easier to implement and accessibility tools more effective.

Chapter 8: Geolocation
Finally getting to the more hyped features of HTML5, this chapter goes over the geolocation API. The chapter focuses on implementing geolocation with jQuery, incorporating fallbacks when there isn't browser support, how to get different location results, and working with Google Maps.

I had more of an issue understanding this chapter, as it threw out a lot more Javascript and jQuery than previous chapters. Granted, I'm not too concerned with learning how to use geolocation like the other HTML5 features, though I hope that as the HTML5 specification finalizes, it would rely less on complicated Javascript/jQuery tricks.

Chapter 9:
The other highly anticipated HTML5 feature is the canvas element. This chapter had many segments about the different effects to use with the canvas element, like drawing, transparency, animating, inserting images, and a few others.

Honestly, this was the chapter I was the least invested in, as the Cookbook basically described the canvas element as being a simple, in-browser vectoring program, that uses code to draw. I'm a creative person who've already learned how to use Adobe Illustrator to great effect. I don't see how I'd want to know how to use the canvas element to do what Illustrator can do. I don't think the Cookbook have gone far enough to show how awesome the canvas element is supposed to be.

Chapter 10: Advanced HTML5 Javascript
The final chapter briefly goes over the other new HTML5 APIs and features, like local storage, app caching, drag and drop, and browser history manipulation.

Each of the different APIs and features brought up in this chapter only gets one "recipe" to explain its use and implementation. Though the one section they get was very informative and well spelled out, I was surprised that some of the features (like the drag and drop API) only got one section to explain them. Then again, I don't currently have an interest or a use in these features at this time, so I wouldn't know if I needed more recipes to flesh out my understanding of them.

All in all, this book is a great must-read. It clarified many things about the new semantic tags, though it didn't seem like it shone enough light on the varied capabilities of the new APIs, like geolocation, canvas, and drag and drop. This book was geared toward people who's interested, but know very little of HTML5. However, this book assumes the reader is already experienced in HTML and some scripting, so it's going to be over the heads of complete beginners.

A bit outdated edition
By Dan Zilberstein
It reflects preliminary HTML-5 features before it was closed and does not reflect modern browsers support. I would expect a newer edition.

good for a beginner
By Stephen
The book has lots of examples that for the most part work but does not offer a real insight into the best practices or any thing more than the basics.

Current but wish it demonstrated tools and chemicals used with pictorials...
By ColosalClay
I loved it just for a read many years ago, and read it to learn more as a hobby and with free time what is happening in the aesthetic industry and how surgery or other procedures take place and how invasive or not the procedures might be. That being said, it appears to be current, but am not sure that it's as dermatological as I would like it to be just by scanning through it. I say its current because it uses traditional methods and more current methods used for cosmetic surgery. However, as a highly visual person I would have loved a pictorial of tools required....or at least one or two of interest for that procedure. We do have youtube.com which can also do the same. Perhaps this is better accompanied with a video compilation of how procedures take place or at least samples of the consult all the way till the end for each chapter...just some ideas on how to improve it for readers...it does appear to be destined to patients rather and perhaps those interested in how the procedures take place. As far as relevance, there are soo many procedures that don't require surgery which are not mentioned that perhaps that might be the surgeons and authors best approach before finally considering surgery as a quick fix but temporary fix....who doesn't age and need maintenance and require more maintenance once one surgical cosmetic procedure is administered. I really do think that a surgeons best friend is not the knife but rather the safest way of arriving at the desired result...without the cutout...and the cutout is always the last resort...most complicated, most risky and frecuently not as gratifying as expected even when expectations are within the normal range. However, laser procedures appear to be quite as invasive if not more invasive than the knife...and a knip and tuck.

Reversing Sail: A History of the African Diaspora (New Approaches to African History), by Michael A. Gomez

This 2005 book examines the global unfolding of the African Diaspora, the migrations and dispersals of the people of Africa, from antiquity to the modern period. Their exploits, challenges, and struggles are discussed over a wide expanse of time in ways that link as well as differentiate past and present circumstances. The experiences of Africans in the Old World, in the Mediterranean and Islamic worlds, is followed by their movement into the New, where their experience in lands claimed by Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, French and English colonial powers is analyzed from enslavement through to the Cold War. While appropriate mention is made of persons of renown, particular attention is paid to the everyday lives of working class people and their cultural efflorescence. The book also attempts to explain contemporary plights and struggles through the lens of history.

Review
"An outstanding synthesis of the history of the African diaspora. Well conceived, argued, and written in an engaging style, Reversing Sail will be indispensable in courses on the peoples of Africa and its diaspora. Specialists, students, and the general reader will find this book intellectually stimulating and enlightening."
- Colin Palmer, Dodge Professor of History, Princeton University

"With commanding scholarship both broad and deep, and with a style that is at once engaging and impeccable in its judgment, Michael Gomez's Reversing Sail fulfills a long-standing need for a synoptic history of the African Diaspora. Synthesizing the best of classical and contemporary scholarship, Gomez provides a powerful interpretive framework that situates and links the African Diaspora at every step with the movement of world history. Reversing Sail is much more than a textbook, but it is also one that will challenge and inspire teachers and students by the new standard set by what is a landmark work."
- Robert A. Hill, Professor of History and Editor-in-Chief, The Marcus Garvey and UNIA Papers, UCLA

"...a tour de force of decades of scholarship on the African Diaspora... an accessible, though current and sophisticated text summarizing the historical concept of the African Diaspora...."
- H-Atlantic , Jeffrey A. Fortin, History Department, University of New Hampshire

"This volume is an excellent addition to the rapidly growing number of books on the African Diaspora and a fine introductory text that will be greatly appreciated by students new to the field." - Larry Hudson, University of Rochester

"One of the text's greatest strengths is that it shows that the people affected by the African Diaspora were not passive participants. Rather they actively responded to their changing situation and worked hard to protect themselves, their families, and their friends in the new circumstances in which they found themselves. This becomes even more evident as Gomez explores the development of race within the second section of the work and how race redefined the place of Africans within the developing Atlantic world. As an undergraduate text, the work serves an important role in that it provides a general history while raising questions that a class could explore and debate." - Ty M. Reese, Department of History, University of North Dakota, H-NET

A unique history
By FrKurt Messick
This book has a statement in its epilogue that is among the best I've ever seen as a match between the subject matter and the purpose of the book itself - Michael A. Gomez writes of the growth of reconnection between Africa proper and those scattered around the world, stating that, `Given the ongoing impoverishment of many in Africa and the Diaspora, such interrelationships require deeper and more practical meaning if they are to play a significant role in ending the despair. The incredible beauty and creativity of the African Diaspora, combined with its unbelievable suffering and disadvantage, are contradictions awaiting resolution.'

Gomez is a professor of history at NYU, a university that offers degree programmes in the study of the African Diaspora. Gomez remarks on the value of the interactions with people at the university in his acknowledgements - it is in the storytelling and conversations that many subjects such as this one come to greater life and clarity. Gomez writes that the story of the African Diaspora is unlike any other in the history of the world, full of contradiction and ambiguity, but nonetheless sharing a pedigree as ancient as almost any other continuing society in the world.

Gomez makes the distinction between the study of the African Diaspora and the study of African Americans in two ways: first, it looks to see the influence of and influences on African-descended persons in different ways in new non-African environments and cultures; and second, it makes comparisons and examines relationships between these communities in geographically separated or distinct ways. It is not tied to the American nation-state, or any other particular nation-state or continent, but looks at persons of African descent outside Africa on a global scale.

There are shared features, however, that many of these communities share beyond their point of origin. Many of the communities find an experience of enslavement, a struggle to maintain traditional African culture, struggles against discrimination, and continuing identification with Africa as common bonds. Gomez divides the book into two sections, the `old world' and the `new world'. Old world topics include the ancient cultures in and around Africa (Egypt, Nubia, Greece and Rome), biblical themes and influences (and the broader context of Judeo-Christian history in African Diaspora themes), and Islamic cultural influences. The role of Africans in each of these histories and traditions is varied and significant; some myths are laid to rest here (the Islamic cultures practiced slavery as did the Western cultures, and in some places continue to have race-relation issues that stem from economic and cultural disadvantages coming out of this period much as the Western world has had), and points of difficulty in understanding and researching are identified (the lack of primary sources, sustained communities preserving histories, etc. means that much has been lost).

With regard to the new world, the history begins with the transatlantic slave trade, particularly the Middle Passage. Slavery was not a monolithic institution, and slavery was practiced differently in different parts of the new world. Thus, the response of the African descendents and the dominant culture vary from place to place; Gomez looks at slavery experience from colony to colony as well as from general regional perspectives. South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and North America all had different purposes and different treatment toward slaves. Again, Gomez lays certain myths to rest: `Although there were 8 million white Southerners in 1860, only 384,884 were slaveholders. This would suggest that the vast majority of whites had no relationship to slavery, had no vested interest in it, but just the opposite was true.' The dominant culture needed the institution of slavery, even if it was only a minority of members of that culture who actually owned the slaves.

Gomez also looks at the emancipation processes of the slaves beyond the North American perspective, showing the different ways in which the struggle for freedom and the achievement of the same manifested in different countries. For example, Haiti's Revolution in the late eighteenth century is shown to be both `crowning achievement' and an ironic catalyst for worsening slavery conditions elsewhere. The aftermath continues to be felt to this day, as `those who struggled so valiantly against tyranny have only met with a U.S.-led policy of ostracism and indifference every since.' Gomez also highlights the experience in Cuba, distinct from many other experiences in the Americas, as a place where the post-slavery situation did not automatically become a place of racial tension and prejudice.

Gomez' final two chapters show the reconnection and movement of people back toward their history, culture and identity, while still remaining, as members of the Diaspora, outside of their ancestral homeland. Communities reconnected with Africa as well as connected for the first time with each other; people of African descent all over the world had the freedom and resources, however limited, to make their own connections on a global scale. This includes but is not limited to political, social, and artistic connections - in areas such as sports and music, there is substantial success across such international boundaries.

Gomez ends each chapter with a narrative bibliography for further readings and research. Gomez states specifically that his intention is not to be exhaustive or comprehensive, but rather to give an introduction into the various places, times, events and persons connected with the broad topic of the African Diaspora. In this regard, Gomez succeeds. The text is interesting and accessible, giving sufficient detail without becoming tedious but also not lacking information or leaving things unaccounted for, save when the primary source material simply is not available (as is the case frequently, and this is part of the issue that Gomez highlights throughout the text). The index is useful, and there are a few maps and pictures scattered throughout the book. I might wish for one bibliography listing in the back for ease of reference, and footnoting through the text for further identification of sources, but these are minor quibbles given the scope and purpose of the book.

Excellent source
By jlip
Professor Gomez has written a rather concise but scholarly general overview of the history of the African Diaspora. For three years I have been teaching a course in the Afr. and Afr. Amer. Studies department at the University of Memphis which is designed to introduce the student to the concept and early history of the Diaspora. I had also been assiduously searching for a quality, cost efficient text which could serve as a compliment to my notes. I think that I have found it in this work.
