The book's title is accurate: "Data Governance Tools" focuses on data-governance-enabling technology, and walks through a structured list of data-governance-related tasks and processes, showing (with one or a few commented screen shots per case) how task X is implemented in software product A.

IBM's InfoSphere product family gets the most coverage, followed by Informatica tools, and Collibra and Talend share the bronze medal. At the other extreme, Microsoft is a no-show, and SAS gets less than a page. As advertised, the book covers the "big data" angle, by talking about Hadoop and even mentions data streams.

The "task list" is very useful of itself, by making one aware of what goes into data governance. The illustrations make the discussion concrete, and, obviously, tell the reader - a CTO, perhaps - that data-governance-related task X, which he just read about, can be automated using software product A, while task Y is handled by software product B.

What the CTO will not be able to get from "Data Governance Tools", however, is guidance on whether B can also do X, or whether A can do Y. (Appropriately, the subtitle promises "evaluation criteria", not feature-comparison checklists). I think one can be pardoned for calling a "Data Governance Tools" a synthesis exercise that is a step above a collage of software products' marketing-copy snippets and screen shots. Nonetheless, I appreciate "Data Governance Tools" as a useful, substantial read.

This book was written for people with Alzheimers.

The story itself isn't bad, but it's slow, holds the main characters hand and gives him whatever he needs.

The real problem with this book is the writing style. I read a lot of books from Amazon unlimited so bad writing is to be expected to a certain degree, but this book is unbearable. Everything of any note is repeated at least 5 times.

Any staff that takes blood and is kind of sentient is not to be trusted!!!!!! x15

Avery good second book

Okay it's hard to review a book without spoilers but I'm going to give it a shot

The author does a very credible job of using this second book to give us a better feel for the world he has created. There are no major revelations and the plot itself is a tad thin but it has occurred to me that that is a good thing. There are obviously five and possibly six books scheduled for this series just based on the number of dragons, there is therefore no real reason for every book to have a dire plot element , the author is correctly taking his own sweet time and developing his characters and world. Hats off for his doing it I believe it will make for an excellent final series.

This book is right up there on my best of the year list but is still way behind Scot Duffs "Brothers"

Imaginative and Exciting Tale

Reborn as a Wizard in a post Apocalyptic world destroyed by dragons under control of evil gods, Simon conjures an air and earth elemental to assist in his survival. How Simon became a Wizard, what he was before the apocalypse, and how he made the best afterward makes for a great tale. The dragons are still there and carrying out a systematic search and destroy actions against the few survivors. Simon and several other reborn now have special powers and are using them as best possible to survive. Simon, his elementals, and select survivors have destroyed two of the six dragons raising world wide havoc. How they did it, who was involved, and all the details are both imaginative and a bit humorous. Can't wait for Book 3.

The standard, but maybe not the best

McQuarrie's book is typically the standard text in many undergraduate and graduate programs, but I believe there are many other resources to learn statistical mechanics in a much clearer way.
I find the following things to be particularly annoying about the book:
1) The typesetting! The pages are very difficult to read, especially equations. It's a very old typeface and my eyes literally hurt after reading McQuarrie for too long.
2) Very few problems are worked out. Many important concepts that should involve more detailed discussion are simply left as exercises to the student. I believe that more peripheral results and extensions of fundamental material are better left as problems, as opposed to fundamental results.
3) The glaring absense of good discussion on spin systems (such as Ising magnets) and critical phenomena. These are VERY important topics in modern statistical mechanics.
I would recommend the following if you want to find good books on statistical mechanics:
1) If you want one comprehensive volume, use Linda Reichl's book.
2) If you are only interested in statistical thermodynamics, use David Chandler's book.
3) If you want both statistical thermodynamics and nonequatilibrium statistical mechanics, use Chandler and Robert Zwanzig's book.
Also, Kubo's statistical thermodynamics book is really good.
I really would not recommend McQuarrie. Save your eyes and get a more modern book with at least a better typesetting.

Classical textbook.

I have found this book to be an excellent resource during my PhD and postdoctoral studies in molecular simulations. It is concise, rigorous and spans the classic problems in statistical mechanics more thoroughly than any other text. The development of the central axioms and theorems and connection with macroscopic thermodynamics is quite enlightening.
I have studied the sections on: foundations, perfect gases, imperfect gases, crystals and liquids. The book also covers kinetic theory, reactions and more.
The book is necessarily concise and therefore is a bit difficult as a first course. However a diligent graduade student could conceivably "slog" through it and would later come to appreciate the rewards. For a cheaper alternative, turn to the other classic of this field by T. L. Hill.

Maybe good for a reference, but not the best first source

I am a engineering/physics student, and I used this book for a first year graduate course in statistical mechanics. The book contains a lot of information, and the chapters are extremely concise. In this, lies both the strengths and weaknesses of the book. I think that the short, too the point writing style makes this book an excellent reference. However, the relatively small amount of exposition made it hard to learn material for the first time from the book. Overall, I would not suggest this book as a first introduction to the subject. But i think that it could be a usefull reference for someone with some background in the subject.

Basically long lists of words without drills

This contains very long lists of words by category with almost no drills for retention. It can be useful to go through and cross out the words you don't want to learn, then create your own exercises with the rest (like by covering the English, then covering the German). But you could do just that with any word list you find online and have more control over what categories of words you'd like to learn.

Great book with well divided sections for the words

This is a great book, with the vocabulary words very well separated by subject. The exercises are great to emphasize the meaning of the word and its usage. I like specially the translation part.
It is a dry book - no pictures at all, what makes studying a long list of words painful sometimes. I wish it was more interactive presenting the words in some way - maybe pictures?

Not useful in Kindle format

Amazon MUST fix the PC Kindle software, especially. Vocabulary lists in almost all language learning Kindle books are images, not text. The PC version does not allow zooming in on these TINY words. I have about 400 books that became worthless when I switched to a Windows tablet.

Try asking Amazon about this, and you will get someone with limited English who will read prepared scripts designed to dismiss your concern.

"Our programmers are working on this".

Really? For years and years? Are they uneducated? Lazy? I have done programming, and worked with good programmers. This is not hard to fix.

The truth seems to be that Amazon feels no pressure to fix this. I'd guess they never will.

About the Author

Dr. Lung-chu Chen is an internationally recognized scholar and Professor of Law at New York Law School, specializing in international law, human rights, and the United Nations. He previously served as Research Associate, Senior Research Associate, and Senior Research Scholar at Yale Law School. He received his LL.B. with first-place honors from National Taiwan University, his LL.M. from Northwestern University, and his LL.M. and J.S.D. from Yale University. While still a junior at the National Taiwan University, he ranked first of some four thousand participants in Taiwan's national examination for judgeship and other high governmental posts-a unique distinction in Taiwan's history.
He is founder and chairman of the Taiwan New Century Foundation (a think tank), founder and president of the New Century Institute (New York), and charter president and honorary president of the Taiwan United Nations Alliance (TAIUNA). He is a board member of the Policy Sciences Center, a former president of the Taiwanese Society of International Law, and a former national policy adviser to the president of Taiwan.

Formerly he was also chairman of the section on international law of the Association of American Law Schools, a member of the executive council of the American Society of International Law, a director of the American Society of Comparative Law, and a member of the editorial board of its journal (American Journal of Comparative Law). He was chief editor of Human Rights, published by the American Bar Association Section on Individual Rights and Responsibilities. In addition, he served as vice president and a member of the governing council of the International League for Human Rights and president of the North America Taiwanese Professors' Association. He was a principal lecturer at the International Institute of Human Rights in Strasbourg, a training center for human rights experts founded by Nobel Peace Prize winner René Cassin.

His publications include Membership for Taiwan in the United Nations: Achieving Justice and Universality (editor), An Introduction to Contemporary International Law, Human Rights and World Public Order (with Myres S. McDougal and Harold D. Lasswell), and Formosa, China, and the United Nations (with Harold D. Lasswell). In addition, he has written and edited numerous books and articles in Chinese. Currently he is general editor of a series of books relating to the U.N. system published under the auspices of the Taiwan Institute for U.N. Studies, a project of the Taiwan New Century Foundation. He is also editor in chief of New Century Think Tank Forum, a quarterly in Chinese published jointly by the Taiwan New Century Foundation and the New Century Institute.

This volume, the fifth in a series that also covers Locke, Hegel, Rousseau, and Descartes, differs somewhat from its more straighforward predecessors in content. After an introductory essay entitled "Kant and the 'Age of Criticism,'" which provides background on Kant's intellectual and writing history, Caygill (coeditor, The Fate of the New Nietzsche, Ashgate, 1993) launches into a dictionary proper. But this is not a dictionary of terms in the conventional sense; the entries are not simply definitions but are more like mini-encyclopedia entries in that they provide analysis and link the terms to other relevant terms in Kant's works. In preparing the dictionary entries this way, Caygill offers a far more useful tool to readers of Kant than the standard dictionary. The bibliographies provide a chronological list of Kant's published writings, a bibliography of works referred to in the dictionary itself, and a list of recommended further readings. One interesting addition is an index that ties the names of philosophers to the dictionary entries in which they appear. Solid and Quite helpful Dictionary on Kant's Philosophy

From A to Z, here is a dictionary on Kant's philosophy which, surprisingly enough, is quite helpful. For someone who is trying to gain a better understanding of Kant's philosophy this text is an invaluable tool to have handy. It is easy to use (since it is an A to Z topical dictionary) and contains a few extra features such as an Introduction on Kant and the Language of Philosophy, an article on Kant and the 'Age of Criticism,' a very handy chronology of Kant's published writings, a section called "Works Referred to in the Text" which sites all the works used to put this dictionary together, a recommended reading list (quite nice feature), and an index of philosophers and philosophical concepts.
Thus, for a text dealing with Kant, the reader gets not only great information on Kant's philosophy, but on his actual works, his concepts, his time period, and information on those philosophers who preceded and followed him.
What is more, a student can use this text to branch out into deeper study on Kant's philosophy due to the recommended reading, but also by way of the text itself. What I mean is, the entries include cross references, text abbreviations where the information (or concept) can be found in Kant's work, and the German origin of the entry/word/concept itself.
Overall, this is a very nice edition to anyone's philosophical library. Moreover, it is one of the better reference works I have seen or used in my research of Immanuel Kant. I highly recommend this text.

well worth the purchase

whether it's your first experience with kant, or you're revisiting him upon reading an essay about him: this book is very useful. it highlights kant's vocabulary in alphabetical order with a little definition of each word. BUT,more importantly, it has references to WHERE the word gets used. and the dictionary spans his entire career. so, it's an excellent reference.

the binding is a bit stiff.
but, still, really useful.

for the ordinary person

I forget the exact words and who said them, but a more recent philosopher once observed that Kant wrote for the 'salvation of the ordinary man, in words that the ordinary man could not possibly understand'. This problem, compounded by the even more abstruse interpretations of Kantian terminology offered by contemporary analytic philosophers, exacerbates the notorious difficulties in following the meaning of the terminology employed by Kant in his arguments in the way that: 1) Kant intended them to be understood, and 2) allows one to meaningfully participate in contemporary discourse surrounding this essential work. Kant is a thinker, like Spinoza before him, whom one must come to terms with. Yet, to understand the terms he uses, one must have a quick, dictionary reference, ready to hand - immediate access to definitions of the terms as one reads. This need is met here. While excellent works like the widely acclaimed CAMBRIDGE COMPANION TO KANT are wonderful aids in helping us understand these seminal and challenging texts, they are not ordered in the reference style format which is needed when reading Kant.
Caygill's excellent ancillary work, written in clear, unencumbered prose, is worthy of the highest approbation. I ask the prospective reader: Where else are you going to find explanations of all the terminology in Kant, and all the abbreviations used in the critical literature, critically juried by some of the top Kant scholars in the world, arranged in alphabetical order, all in one well-ordered, easily accessed volume?
Ironically, as Caygill informs us, in the entry for "definition", that, decribing definition as the presentation of the "...the complete, original concept of a thing within the limits of its concept", Kant "...goes to some length to show that, strictly speaking, there can be no philosophical definitions. Empirical concepts cannot be defined because it is impossible to know their precise limits, nor is it possible to be certain that they are original. They may be explicated by making their contents explicit, but they do not fulfill the criteria of definition. Nor do a priori concepts, since it is impossible to be certain that analysis has been completely effected: "the completeness of the analysis of my concept is always in doubt , and a multiplicity of suitable examples suffices only to make the completeness probable, never to make it apodeictically certain". (CPR A 729/ B 757)
Albeit, Caygill does well enough to warrant that there is no one approaching Kant's texts, regardless of their level of expertise (and most of us have relatively little, who would not be privileged to have this comprehensive reference ready-to-hand.

About the Author
Ali Çehreli has been working as a C, C++, and more recently D programmer with small and large networking companies in Silicon Valley since 1996. He is a board member and the secretary of The D Language Foundation, and an organizer of the Silicon Valley Chapter of the ACCU and the DLang Silicon Valley Meetup groups. He is a regular speaker at D conferences.

One of the better programming books I've read through

(The first thing to point out is that this book is available for free as pdf in a link from the dlang.org homepage (http://ddili.org/ders/d.en/index.html). The pdf and book appear to be identical. I dislike reading books/tutorials from a pdf since I'll copy and paste the example code and exercises, which isn't conducive to learning... Plus, having a good looking hardcopy is always nice.)

The book is great. It may even be a good book for learning programming in general (especially C-like languages), if you don't have any coding experience. The entire book gives very concise statements and examples for each idea. Even the chapters themselves are short and to-the-point. The author doesn't try to be sarcastic or witty. It's a proper tutorial for idiomatic D.

Though it's probably a reasonable reference book for D, if you already have a good handle on the language or have a lot of experience with C++, the book does build in a linear fashion. Since most of my previous experience is in python, skipping chapters made me feel lost... so read chapters in order. (The author even says this in the preface.)
