Learning from Experience: Minority Identities, Multicultural Struggles, by Paula M. L. Moya

In Learning from Experience, Paula Moya offers an alternative to some influential philosophical assumptions about identity and experience in contemporary literary theory. Arguing that the texts and lived experiences of subordinated people are rich sources of insight about our society, Moya presents a nuanced universalist justification for identity-based work in ethnic studies.

This strikingly original book provides eloquent analyses of such postmodernist feminists as Judith Butler, Donna Haraway, Norma Alarcón, and Chela Sandoval, and counters the assimilationist proposals of minority neoconservatives such as Shelby Steele and Richard Rodriguez. It advances realist proposals for multicultural education and offers an understanding of the interpretive power of Chicana feminists including Cherríe Moraga, Gloria Anzaldúa, and Helena María Viramontes. Learning from Experience enlarges our concept of identity and offers new ways to situate aspects of race, gender, class, and sexual orientation in discursive and sociopolitical contexts.

Unnatural Creatures is a collection of short stories about the fantastical things that exist only in our minds—collected and introduced by beloved New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman.

The sixteen stories gathered by Gaiman, winner of the Hugo and Nebula Awards, range from the whimsical to the terrifying. The magical creatures range from werewolves to sunbirds to beings never before classified. E. Nesbit, Diana Wynne Jones, Gahan Wilson, and other literary luminaries contribute to the anthology.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-The 16 short stories in this anthology contain accounts of delightfully fantastical creatures, ranging from the familiar (werewolves, mermaids, griffins, and unicorns) to the chillingly mysterious (an ever-expanding, flesh-eating blob; a strange bird that spurs unpredictable changes to its surroundings; and even Death herself). Classic science fiction and fantasy authors Anthony Boucher, Frank R. Stockton, Peter S. Beagle, E. Nesbit, and Diana Wynne Jones are represented, as are contemporary authors such as Nnedi Okorafor, E. Lily Yu, and Gaiman himself. From the first page, Gaiman appeals to a sense of imagination, prefacing each story with a brief personal commentary, causing readers to stop and ponder questions they never knew they had. Who would a griffin eat? What does a phoenix taste like? What happens when you question an invisible dragon? Why are there always too many coat hangers? All of these questions, and more, are answered here. Some of the stories are silly, some heartbreaking, and some profound, but all are guaranteed to make readers' hair stand on end.-Liz Overberg, Darlington Middle School, Rome, GAα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
From darkly menacing to bizarrely surreal, these 16 fantasy stories featuring mythical and imaginary creatures combine work from such luminaries as Saki, E. Nesbit, and Anthony Boucher, as well as more contemporary writers. Larry Niven’s The Flight of the Horse is on the sillier side of the spectrum: a time traveler is sent to the past to retrieve a horse, which he has never seen except in picture books, and he mistakenly returns with a unicorn instead. In Nalo Hopkinson’s A Smile on the Face, a self-conscious girl is bullied for her size and pressured into an unwanted sexual encounter, but she finds inner strength—and an inner fire-breathing monster—thanks to an accidentally swallowed cherry pit from the hamadryad in her front yard. Gaiman’s contribution, Sunbird, recounts the adventures of the Epicurean Club members, who, grown bored after tasting every available thing on the planet, enjoy the best (and last) meal of their lives. In true Gaiman fashion, these stories are macabre, subversive, and just a little bit sinister. His fans will eat this up—ravenously. The book will benefit nonprofit 826DC, which fosters student writing skills. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Gaiman’s name should draw a wide readership. Grades 8-12. --Sarah Hunter

Unnatural Tables of Contents
By Roochak
Harper and editor Neil Gaiman have a novel strategy for marketing an anthology: omitting the authors' names from the table of contents.

For those who don't find listing the titles AND authors in the table of contents to be too louche, here's the information the editor and publisher have declined to include. (The original publication dates are a bonus I decided to throw in.)

"Inksplot" by Gahan Wilson (1972)
"The Cartographer Wasps and the Anarchist Bees" by E. Lily Yu (2011)
"The Griffin and the Minor Canon" by Frank R. Stockton (1885)
"Ozioma the Wicked" by Nnedi Okorafor (original to this anthology, 2013)
"Sunbird" by Neil Gaiman (2006)
"The Sage of Theare" by Diana Wynne Jones (1982)
"Gabriel-Ernest" by Saki (1909)
"The Cockatoucan; or, Great-Aunt Willoughby" by E. Nesbit (1900)
"Moveable Beast" by Maria Dhavana Headley (original to this anthology)
"The Flight of the Horse" by Larry Niven (1969)
"Prismatica" by Samuel R. Delany (1977)
"The Manticore, the Mermaid, and Me" by Megan Kurashige (original to this anthology)
"The Compleat Werewolf" by Anthony Boucher (1942)
"The Smile on the Face" by Nalo Hopkinson (2004)
"Or All the Seas with Oysters" by Avram Davidson (1958)
"Come Lady Death" by Peter S. Beagle (1963)

magical and balanced
By OperationDandelion
It's rare to find an anthology where I like the vast majority of the works in it. This is one of them! I loved the stories in here and I loved how unexpected some of them were. The page introducing each story was nice and the illustrations were quirky and fitting. All of the stories would also be appropriate for young adults as well which is always nice.

The stories I liked best were:

the first one (seriously can't type the title; I read it and I knew I had to buy the collection! It is a fantastic combination of illustration and text that catches you right away.)

The Griffin and the Minor Canon (I love The Lady or the Tiger? so I was thrilled to find more stories by Stockton. I thought the story was sweet and surprising.)

The Flight of the Horse (fun and read a bit like Douglas Adams)

The Compleat Werewolf (I have a huge soft spot for werewolves and I thought the Professor was very endearing.)

The Manticore, the Mermaid, and Me (Didn't like it much initially but upon thinking about it I think the "moral" is very truthful.)

Or All the Seas with Oysters (Such a clever idea! Brilliant!)

Come Lady Death (The ending has a nice sting to it. Better than I expected it to be!)

Stories I didn't care for:

Gabriel-Ernest (pretty basic werewolf story)

Moveable Beast (I loved the twist at the end but the story was so heavy-handed and aggressively not feel-good that it was tacky.)

Prismatica (Felt like I was cheated out of the ending the reader deserved. Good story but fell flat.)

The Smile on the Face (I liked the refrain of the poem throughout but it was trying to shoehorn in far too many ideas with the trees and the cherry pit and the dragons. Cheapened a good story.)

Overall I definitely recommend the book!

Good Stories of Strange Creatures
By Black Plum
"A griffin, a werewolf, a sunbird . . .These are just some of the fantastical creatures you'll encounter within these pages. From the cockatoucan, whose laugh rearranges an entire kingdom, to the roving shapeless Beast that lurks in a forest, herein is a collection of rare and magnificent species. Each one will thrill, delight, and quite possibly unnerve you. Selected by master storyteller Neil Gaiman, the sixteen stories in this menagerie will introduce you to a host of strange, wondrous beings that have never existed anyplace but in the richness of the imagination. With stories from Neil Gaiman, Diana Wynne Jones, E. Nesbit, and many more." I do thing the way the book is described is a bit misleading. I was under the impression that the stories would be all new ones written for this collection. But the majority of them have been published before. One, "The Griffin and the Minor Canon", I'd even read before! But the stories are still really good. I was pleasantly surprised to find a paperback edition even though the book had just come out.

As with any short story collection, there are some great stories, some good ones, and some that just didn't work for me. The first one was very fun. Its title is very difficult to say (you'll see why if you read the book). There's a story about bees rebelling against wasps, a girl in an African village who can talk to snakes, an epicurean society looking for new subjects and more. The one about the epicurean society, "Sunbird", is written by Neil Gaiman. The other authors in the collection are Peter S. Beagle, Anthony Boucher, Avram Davidson, Samuel R. Delaney, Maria Headley, Nalo Hopkinson, Diana Wynne Jones, Megan Kurashige, E. Nesbit, Larry Niven, Nnedi Okorafor, Saki, Frank R. Stockton, and E. Lily Yu. Diana Wynne Jones's story has Chrestomanci in it. He appears in many of her books.

None of the beginning stories thrilled me, but I did really enjoy "Gabriel-Ernest" by Saki. It was an excellently chilling story. "The Cockatoucan" was also excellent, very British and very entertaining. In the later sections of the book there were a lot of other good stories, making Unnatural Creatures very enjoyable and definitely worth reading.

"This is the pure, original meaning of the Law of Attraction, far away from fad books like "The Secret". The Mindful Attraction Plan is a very neat packaging of wisdom from a number of different sources, and that's exactly what makes it stand out. It's simple, easy-to-use and more importantly, it just plain works. " -Brian C Rideout "The Wild Man Project"

Most threats of ending relationships in hope of change, fail because of extremely poor timing. The MAP covers the pacing of the escalation toward the Resolution Point. Most serious attempts to change things happen in the heat of the moment, which is typically a negative emotion blowout and ineffective. The MAP keeps things calm and steady in the hope that your partner starts acting like a reasonable person and the relationship can start turning positive.

The first part of the book is a very clear description of exactly how you become more attractive as fast as possible. Covering six areas of development you need to focus on:

(1) Physical Fitness and Health
(2) Money and Material Possessions
(3) Displays of High Value
(4) Building Relationship Comfort
(5) Personality and Preferences
(6) High-Energy Sex

Within each area there's a traffic light color coded system for things you need to do.

Red = Draining Energy = Stop It
Yellow = Stagnant Energy = Fix It
Green = Flowing Energy = Do It.

There's no confusion about what you should be doing to improve your attractiveness and I even cover the exact order of importance your addressing things needs to follow. The (1) to (6) order is very important for example.

The second part of the book covers the seven phase approach to taking your new attraction and leveraging that into getting what you want from your relationships.

About the Author
Athol Kay woke up one morning four years ago and decided he wanted to fix everyone's marriage. Not realizing it was impossible, he started an influential blog, wrote The Married Man Sex Life Primer, started a forum, got some news media write ups, ended up on Inside Edition, got dragged to Human Resources, quit his day job and now has thousands of emails of thanks for saving marriages and restarting sex lives.

Now he wants to fix your whole life.

Improve your life and the lives of those around you
By Amazon Customer
Dan Savage, sex columnist and political activist, writes that he starts every day going through the large number of emails he receives from men frustrated at the lack of sex in their marriages. This is clearly a common pain point and a big problem. Dan, who is compassionate, wise, witty and unafraid of a fight when thrust into one, generally ignores such letters in his columns to focus on less vanilla issues. Who'd read the column otherwise? [*]

Athol Kay, blogger and author, has taken a different approach and the success of his advice has allowed him to create a popular and growing web community and write a series of books. Mindful Attraction Plan, is his latest. Good as his other books were, this stands above them.

For Athol Kay, the sex deprived marriage is only an indicator of deeper problems. Solving the deeper problems will either automatically turn the sex problem around or provide the tools to allow a more assertive approach to resolve the issue. Sex deprivation need not be the life issue. The problem could be you are lonely, broke, unhappy, overweight, in a bad relationship or, indeed, undersexed.

For the author, loneliness, bad relationship, overweight, undersexed or other obvious pain points are often not problems that can be directly solved. They are symptoms of something deeper. Solve the deeper problem and the symptoms resolve. I call this the thorn in the lion's paw problem. The issue for the lion is not that they limp when they walk, can't land after pouncing, stand properly or that the other lions laugh at their awkwardness. If the thorn is not addressed, then working directly on any of those clear handicaps will not solve anything. Discover the thorn and remove it and the whole system of problems resolves.

Humans are complex creatures operating within complex systems. Any number or combination of things could be that thorn in the lion's paw. After explaining the happiness and life satisfaction gains for a person and those around them by identifying and resolving the core issues, the book provides the equivalent of a pre-flight check-list of what the problems could be and what the solutions are.

Like a pre-flight check list, most of the potential problems are obvious 'is there gas in the tank?', 'have the stops been removed from the landing gear?' But pre-flight check lists work, even though everything on the list is obvious, for even the obvious can be missed. How many have friends who can not see in themselves what is obvious to those around them? We are no different about ourselves. No sex in your marriage? Being heavily overweight would make you unattractive and that could be a big part of the problem. Start working out and don't scrimp on the weight training! The book's pre-flight check list has dozens of such potential issues and is a way for an individual to gain some distance from themselves and realize what some of their own issues might be. The book then gives clear advice about what you can do, right now, to start to turn around each of the issues identified.

And there are a lot of potential issues.

People, imperfect as we are, will normally have more than one issue. Weakness in one area will contribute to weakness in other areas. Turning these around will take time and dedication. But the task should not be daunting as there is always some small step forward that can easily be made. The key is to make those steps and keep the long goal in mind. Even taking a wrong step is better than taking no step at all, for now you have begun moving. Individual steps might be easy, but getting everything lined up will require real work of a year or more.

Next, with the solution built, you have to fix the problem. Sometimes the problem will resolve itself as you work on your part of the solution. However, relationships take on a life and patterns of their own and the second part of the book outlines how to positively and assertively use the changes you have made in your life to get the changes you need in your relationship or, failing that, move to a relationship that meets your needs.

Those who follow the author's web community, marriedmansexlife (mindfulattractionplan is still under construction as I write), you will have seen in real time numerous such situations being resolved with people following that advice. I am blessed with a relatively uncomplicated life with no major issues (knock on wood), but I have learned a great deal from the author's web community and his books, including this one. I've tried many of the suggestions and to my surprise and joy, they have worked.

Athol Kay's community, his blog and his books - including this one - have been some of the best investments I have made in improving my own life and the lives of those around me. Mindful Attraction Plan will only take a couple hours to read but is sure to contain several insights that you can put to work immediately for your own happiness and the happiness of those you care about. Without hesitation or reservation, I strongly recommend it.

[*] Dan's advice to all those married men driven crazy by the lack of sex in their otherwise good marriages is to discretely cheat. American Savage: Insights, Slights, and Fights on Faith, Sex, Love, and Politics Absent credible options this may well be the best advice, but it is the advice of despair. Mindful Attraction Plan provides other credible options.

Frightening, Wonderful and Miraculous
By TM
This book is the second of Athol Kay's that I've read. The other book, the Married Man Sex Life Primer 2011, is like a guy's best friend at a sports bar setting his buddy straight because he can't stand to see him in such pain. This book is different. It is for both men and women, and it going into more in depth on how to actually fix things. As a woman, as much as I loved the first book, I find the Mindful Attraction Plan (The MAP) so useful. It is for me too.
And the message is frightening - how much I thought I knew, and how much I was wrong. And the message is wonderful. I have power to change things. And the message is miraculous.
Things actually can change. For the better.
If you every buy a book to fix something... something that you can't identify, that shouldn't bother you because you're doing things the way you have learned are right, but you're still sad and disheartened, and you're a little bit scared - and this isn't only about relationships, as you'll learn... it is about your whole life...
This is the book that I recommend you buy as a start. Start here.
And if you're a guy, get a copy of MMSL Primer 2011 to go with it.
And be prepared. It isn't gentle. It isn't easy. But it is lifechanging.

Good book, recommend it, but a little "soft" for my tastes
By Average Married Dad
Summary: As a two year hard-core student of the Red Pill, self-improvement and intergender and sex dynamics, I am not the target audience for this book and didn't necessarily "learn" anything new. With that said, the lens through which this book was written was entirely unique, will appeal to a large audience and it reawakened some of my own thinking and has already allowed me to push through past barriers to improvement. I think that no matter where you are, if you keep an open mind, you'll get some new perspective or some new nugget that hasn't yet been uncovered and I would recommend it anyone.

Full Review: I'll admit that I am struggling with how to present this review. It first needs to start with Athol's previous book: The MMSL Primer 2011 (AKA "The Primer"). This book was raw, edgy and was written for men, and explained things between genders in a comprehensive way that then allowed us married guys to apply it to our lives to improve ourselves and our relationships. This new book may have the same bullet points repackaged, but is the opposite of raw and edgy. As a regular reader and one who is used to the author writing to a more masculine audience, it was admittedly a hard pill to swallow. The Mindful Attraction Plan is written for both men and women and you can tell from the outset it was toned down specifically so that it appealed to more conservative masses. I certainly can't fault this approach since it does probably start more people on a journey towards a more positive life, and as one who is pro-staying-married (once you're there), I think this message can't be spread far enough. But I, for one, missed the raw edge.

I liken the two books to differing approaches to a protest. The Primer was the "in your face" aggressive protester who is throwing bottles at the cops and pissed off about whatever injustice they are protesting about. The Mindful Attraction Plan (The MAP) is the hippy non-violent protester who accomplishes their fight against injustice in a more peaceful way. Both are acceptable approaches depending on your vantage point, and are two sides of the same coin... much like the yin/yang-esque symbol on the new book's cover.

For about half my life now, my philosophical and spiritual thinking migrated from younger christian beliefs to more eastern philosophy and non-traditional spirituality. I was really surprised to see this play a foundational role in The MAP. Positive and negative energy in the context of self and relationships is something I've believed for awhile, and Athol makes this the centerpiece of his book. To me, this makes way too much sense and was a little surprised that he made the jump from the raw force that was The Primer to the softer more positive, more spiritual approach here. But in doing so, it does lose some of the biological and anthropological explanations and backbone with regards to intergender relationships that made The Primer so powerful. It focuses nearly entirely on self, being present, making changes within yourself as an end in and of itself. I really liked the idea of making small improvements each day (he referred to a change of 0.1% each day) to add up to big improvements later.

As one who considers himself more academic and loves statistics, studies and research in support of key points, I thought The Map was lacking. I consider it more gooshy and soft science (at best) when he was making his point. It lacked some substance in my opinion. He references a number of times throughout the book circumstances where he's seen certain things or helped couples overcome toxic situations, but he doesn't ever reference specific stories. Books like No More Mr Nice Guy and Mating in Captivity: Unlocking Erotic Intelligence carry more weight due to the specific examples of real couples dealing with specific situations. Now the focus is more on self in The Map, but thought this type of thing would have bolstered some of his writing.

As a huge fan of Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now about being and living in the present, I think The Mindful Attraction Plan has a lot to offer for self-improvement and about seeing the dynamics between people in a new light. I can say that there are still stagnant things in my own life that I need to work on, and this book has me already addressing them in a way that is positive and doesn't beat up too bad the reader's past choices. It's a very positive mindset book, and while it's a little soft for my tastes, still has a lot to offer and is a good introduction to self-improvement, marriage improvement and sex improvement (in a roundabout way) without scarring the uninitiated. I would say it's a good companion to The Primer, but of the two, The Primer is more of a slap in the face from a Bull which I think is needed for many men having a hard time figuring out why their marriage isn't what they want. The MAP is a soft approach into the same areas and is a great intro to men and women who are looking to simply improve themselves and as a result, their marriage and sex life.

Count Magnus and Other Ghost Stories contains the entire first two volumes of James’s ghost stories, Ghost Stories of an Antiquary and More Ghost Stories of an Antiquary. These volumes are both the culmination of the nineteenth-century ghost story tradition and the inspiration for much of the best twentieth-century work in this genre. Included in this collection are such landmark tales as “Count Magnus,” set in the wilds of Sweden; “Number 13,” a distinctive tale about a haunted hotel room; “Casting the Runes,” a richly complex tale of sorcery that served as the basis for the classic horror film Curse of the Demon; and “Oh, Whistle, and I’ll Come to You, My Lad,” one of the most frightening tales in literature. The appendix includes several rare texts, including “A Night in King’s College Chapel,” James’s first known ghost story.

Not as Comprehensive as the Oxford World Classics _Casting The Runes_
By Winter's Icy Grip
I realize that no one will probably put out a book to rival the amazing and beautiful _A Pleasing Terror_ put out by Ash-Tree Press several years ago, but Amazon's description of _Count Magnus and Other Ghost Stories : The Complete Ghost Stories of M. R. James, Volume 1_ (Penguin Classics) made it out to sound much better than it actually is, since it was listed at being 400 pages long, but is in reality a far slimmer tome of 288 pages. Very disappointing.

The book does have a nice sized font, but suffers from a thin cover (albeit with a great cover illustration), and a bit floppy overall.

The 15 stories included are among the best ghost stories ever written. But with so many book containing the works of M. R. James, I try to be a bit more discerning. This edition is brief and of decent publishing standards.

Stories Awesome: Annotation Lame!
By Severian
The stories of Mr. James are above reproach; unique in English literature for being subtle and creepy at the same time and shaped by James' knowledge of medieval history, English history, and the occult. The question for the reader is whether they want to pony up [...] for the Penguin annotated editions of James' tales, as the James repertoire is in the public domain and you could read many of these stories for free on the internet and / or get a [...] copy of the "Collected Ghost Stories" from Wordsworth Press and get 30 out of 33 of the stories featured in the two combined Penguin volumes. So the question then is are Joshi's notes and intros worth about [...]?

S.T. Joshi is an immensely gifted editor and critic. His studies of the "Weird Tale" are modern classics in the field, and the immense work he has put into his Lovecraft bio and his annotated Lovecraft volumes are a paradigm. There is no doubt that if Mr. Joshi put the full focus of his attention on working with James' material that he could have easily justified the purchase price for these books. Unfortunately, Joshi, for whatever reasons, just went through the motions here and produced a fairly pedestrian work of annotation and criticism to accompany the text.

Joshi's annotated Lovecraft or annotated Blackwood (also available from Penguin) are superb works of annotation - each story has copious notes explaining themes and background of the work at hand. In approaching James though, Joshi appears dutiful at best or even bored. Many tales here have less than half a dozen bland notes, and many of the notes are nothing more than scutwork, translations and nutshell bios of historical figure mentioned.

This would be fine if James needed no annotation. (But then why buy these books at all?) The true issue is that James' work would indeed benefit from some first grade notes. For instance "The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral" is a story involving an ambitious clergyman who schemes to murder his inconvenient predecessor who is holding him from a promotion. The career of the sinister cleric has many subtle details that point up James' low opinion of him based on his theology and clerical administration policies.

For a modern reader who is not fully aware of Episcopalian intra-denominational quarrels in the late 19th Century, knowing this info will add a new level of depth and interest to the story. Instead, Joshi tells us none of this and simply translates a few Latin phrases and fleshes out a few Biblical citations, something the ordinary reader with internet access could do on their own with a [...] copy of the stories. In comparison, Joshi's notes in his annotated Lovecraft for "Herbert West Reanimator" (one of the slightest and most pulpy of fictions in the HPL body of work) are far more detailed, engaging, and affectionate.

Now you might say "well who cares about Episcopalian church governance squabbles of the 19th Century?" and indeed the Barchester story works very well even if the reader knows none of the "extrinsic" detail. But yet the entire point of an annotated edition is to add maximum depth and detail to a story for those interested in pursuing such a level of analysis. To provide a minimalist annotation defeats the entire purpose of the endeavor, as the reader may be better served by dispensing with the slight commentary offered and simply reading the work in question cheaply or for free while doing their own cursory research as needed for historical figures, translations, etc.

The problem may be that Joshi is well-known for his postulate that a Christian perspective is incompatible with effective horror writing. Joshi is a rather strident atheist and feels that atheism and similar godless perspective make for the most creative and interesting horror. I see his point, but yet the existence of effective horror by pious men like Hawthorne and Montague Rhodes James acts as a counterpoint to Joshi's thesis. This is not to say that Joshi sets out to sabotage James with lame notes - rather it perhaps shows why Joshi viewed this particular exercise as a bore and a task rather than a pleasure.

I do not wish to psychoanalyze the editor too much; my theory above may be entirely wrong. However, the heart of the matter is that if we compare Joshi's notes and analyses on the stories of the pantheistic Blackwood, the existensialist Lovecraft, or the atheist Ligotti, we see that he has done a much better job than here. Maybe this is due to the fact that he finds these others more personally simpatico, or perhaps he simply finds detailed textual analysis of James to be uninteresting.

In any case, the ultimate answer to the question of whether a reader should purchase these two volumes of James' ghost stories is probably not. The much cheaper Wordsworth edition (though less aesthetically pleasing) will offer all the pleasures of the original text (or 90% of them anyway), the somewhat cheaper Oxford World Classics Edition though offering only 20 or so tales has a far better intro and notes by Michael Cox, and for the ultimate discount, most of these tales are in the public domain and can be tracked down and read for free over the internet. Joshi, though ordinarily adding enough value to an annotated edition to justify a higher price, has fallen down on the job here and given us a bare-bones minimal effort annotation effort.

Academic and Exciting Ghost Stories
By Dave
M.R. James' scholarship in the areas of medieval manuscripts and church history manifest themselves in appreciable ways throughout his many stories. The stories range from definitively supernatural (Canon Alberic's Scrap-Book) to those that really allow you to question the reality of the events described ("'Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You My Lad'"). James has a wonderful grasp of just how much background story is necessary to create story and character depth, while at the same time establishing a mood conducive to truly spooky and chilling revelations.

Jame's training and knowledge allow him to tap into real history and geography, as well as invent things which seem utterly plausible - the Penguin notes are helpful in circumventing extensive research to determine whether a place is real or not, and what historical relevance there might be for the story. However, those not interested in this may grow tired of the notes and those pursuing studies will find the recommended reading of far more pertinence.

This is a nice, portable introduction to M.R. James' ghost stories and is highly recommended to those that are interested in the gothic and to anyone who enjoys a good short story.
