Finally, after a painful divorce, he found it in an unconventional way; with a dark-haired woman met on the Internet and wooed on the exotic islands of the Philippines. Nazis and Nudists is a series of poignant - and sometimes humorous - essays recounting that long journey. It is a story of love lost and love found. Thank you Sir David Haldane for this signed free book.

Got this today by mail and i couldnt stop reading the moment i flipped on page one. So far i sense this as a non fiction work showcasing the grandeur of seemingly ephemeral experiences both glory or tragedy- highlighting the life of an established journalist... carefully extracted from his citadel of yesteryears and written in sheer beauty for the readers to feel what is essential in his intrinsic history of loving, laughing, learning and perhaps living the "Nazis and Nudists" way. Work of art! You will enjoy.

Memoir from the 60s and beyond

A fun, breezy and at times enlightening series of stories about the author's past and present. It reminded me of a time in my own youth I had almost forgotten, namely the 60s and early 70s.

What a life--and he survived!

At times, David's story will have you shaking your head, given the very poor judgment he sometimes exhibits. I mean, really, living with and inviting a 19-year-old, six-foot stripper to your office party?! That's not adventure, that's career suicide but somehow the author survived this close call and many more. He's had a fun-filled life and certainly didn't get short-changed. You won't either. As a former print journalist myself, I print-bonded with his story and admire his gusto for life. Wonderful is a good word for this memoir. David has had a wonderful life (hey, he's not dead yet) and he has written a wonderful story.
Note: I am not related to this author and do not know him in any way although I'd like to suggest that he read my memoir "Leaving Story Avenue" to get an idea of how the East Coast newspapers were around the same time. Is that a shameless plug? I guess so. :)

McCulloch's MiHsC is the most beautiful and elegant theory I have ever found (Nobel?)

McCulloch delivers an absolutely stunning theory like a boxer delivers a brilliant fight. And if I were the referee, I would have called the fight early because McCulloch decimates the alternatives.

McCulloch begins with a wonderfully well written explanation and history of basic physics and then modern physics. While doing so, he strongly argues for doing science from a platform of falsifiability and observation, echoing strongly from Ernst Mach. Those theories that are effectively ad-hoc and highly adjustable leave little room to be conclusively disproven since they essentially allow different justifications for the same behavior. McCulloch sees the ever increasing reliance on dark matter and dark energy as such a case in Cosmology. He holds himself and his theory to the same standard, and his derivations and calculations are clear, uncluttered and elegant.

Beyond the comfortable writing style, the analogies and comparisons he uses make his bigger point immediately clear in almost every instance. From "waves in the harbor" to his application of the science behind the flute, it is obvious that McCulloch has a strong vision of the mechanics at work.

When later writing about experimental evidence, he acknowledges limitations, caveats, and uncertainties in any aspect that they exist, most often with an eye towards better modeling and better data. The space for such refinement is large, given how incredibly simple some of his models are for these phenomena and how bad the data is, which makes the accuracy to the data even more impressive. To that point, McCulloch's model for galactic orbital velocity (across the enormous range of mass of galaxies) fits on a single line maybe 3 inches wide if you have big handwriting, is entirely derived from constants and his theory, and is amazingly accurate across the range.

The range of anomalies explained, combined with their parametric simplicity and the accuracy of the predictions against the data makes the theory almost unsettlingly compelling.

This book is relatively short due to McCulloch's blistering pace though I would not have it any other way. In fact, because your jaw will be dropped so often, I would advise you wear something to cover your mouth to prevent spiders or insects from wandering in.

A Major Paradigm Shift

I've been a physics groupie for most of my 82 years, and, it seems to me that McCulloloch's MiHsC ( Modified inertia by a Hubble scale Casimir effect ) is a major paradigm shift on the order of Planck's H Constant, that solved the Radiation Curve and sired Quantum Mechanics, & Einstein's general relativity that explains mass=time=space via E=MC2. Einstein's General Relativity and Heisenberg's uncertainty principle are essentially now the basic platform of The Standard Model.
Yet, as the years flow by, more and more anomalies occur that The Standard Model is unable to answer. Rather than start anew, physicists simply tack on a little equation to account for the anomaly, and label it either unknown dark matter or dark force. Because of that, physic's can only be relatively certain of only 4 % of the universe. It seems that the other 96% of the unknown dark matter/force is but a fudge factor to prop up The Standard Model. If so, MiHsC seems to shine a very bright light on the 96% of the unknown universe, while still being a good fit for The Standard Model.
That said, it's long past time for noted physicists to try to fault MiHsC. You'll find Dr. Mcculloch eager to answer your questions and explain his
equations in minute detail.
