About the Author

Martha J. Boss has led teams in the inspection, analysis, and risk management of electrical safety components, including electromagnetic field (EMF) analyses. Boss earned her BS and BA degrees from the University of Nebraska and the University of Northern Iowa in biology, with a chemistry and physics emphasis. She edited and contributed to Building Vulnerability Assessments, Biological Risk Engineering Handbook, and Air Sampling and Industrial Hygiene Engineering (CRC Press). Martha is also the co-author of Evaluation of Stored Energy Hazards in Underground Coal Mines during and after an Emergency, provided to the National Institute of Occupational Health (NIOSH).

Gayle Nicoll has extensive experience in a variety of environmental, health, and safety (EHS) endeavors, including industrial facilities, nuclear research facilities, chemical laboratories, and metal-working facilities. She holds BS degrees in physics and chemistry from Indiana University, a MS in analytical chemistry from Purdue University, and a PhD in chemistry education from Purdue University. Stunning

Deva Zan is an extraordinary illustrated metaphysical fantasy. The author Yoshitaka Amano has illustrated many books by other artists, but this is the first novel that he has written, and what a wonderful debut it is. The prose could do with a little work in places, but the concept and artwork make up for any lack on the writing side.

Deva Zan is a powerful story about a Japanese Warrior from ancient times who has forgotten his true self - surely an analogy for everyman in this essentially Buddhist tale. His disillusionment with battle cause him to wander and come upon an ethereal girl who encourages him to seek his lost comrades and remember what they once were - gods - and what he once fought for - saving existence from the void. His journey takes him through many bizarre realms, including modern day New York City, and leads him to the Akashic records which hold all the data of all times. Here, he picks up a disc containing what he needs to remember, but reading its data comes at a price, the knowledge of one of their company's death.

The setting for the final battle is beyond the physical realm and the imagery invoked by the words at this stage is as vibrant as the artwork. Our concepts fold in on themselves along with a chunk of Manhattan and in true metaphysical style, good and evil, existence and non-existence are seen in their true light, as two sides of one whole. The book held my attention throughout and built to an exciting and conceptually fascinating conclusion.

I can't do justice to the intricacies of this beautiful book; it is a deeply spiritual tale that speaks of the very foundations of existence as understood in Buddhist philosophy. The surrealistic artwork is not merely an illustration, it is symbolic communication, an integral part of the story and, for me, the best part of the experience of reading this book.

I received this as an electronic ARC via Netgalley and read it on my iPad in a Goodreader app that allows you to see both pages of a double spread, a necessity for an electronic version because the layout of the artwork on the double pages is part of the aesthetic. However, even if this publication is available electronically to the public, it is one of those books you'll want in hard copy so you can pick it up and look at it over and over again. I highly recommend it.

Absolutely Beautiful!!

I have recently become a big fan of Amano's work, and this book is no exception.

The book itself: I was first struck by the overall size of the book. It was much larger, and heavier than I expected. The glossy text on the cover is a nice touch, and really adds to the overall feeling of quality. The pages are noticeably thicker than most books, which also adds to the level of quality.

The format: Deva Zan conatains over 200 illustrations by Amano ranging from rough sketches to fully composed works. Over half of the pages in the book are full sized illustrations. The story, also by Amano, guides you through these works.

The story: This was the part that most interested me about Deva Zan. Amano has done so many books full of his art, you kind of know what to expect there, but this was the first time that he authored a book. Put simply, it just works. The mood of the book is set brilliantly by the somber expression of his characters. Although the story does get a bit foggy in a few places, overall it is a beautiful and very philosophic tale of life, death, and everything in between.

The best part for me is the price, I would happily pay $60, $70 for this book.

Stunning art with a decent mythology story.

This is a stand alone book done by the artist Amano who has contributed art to both the Vampire HUnter D series as well as Final Fantasy (among a million other things). He is one of my favorite artists, so when I stumbled upon this in Half Price Books I was excited to pick it up.

This book deals with the mythology of Japanese Buddhism. In this book the twelve Juni Jinsho stood guard over the cosmos, each guarding a point on the zodiac…now they have vanished leaving humanity to fight against the forces of darkness on their own. Enter Deva Zan, a samurai with no memory who ends up journeying through time and space to find the Juni Jinsho and help restore their memory.

This book contains some amazing artwork, which I absolutely loved. The art pretty much makes this book. The book is amazingly well put together, it is a large volume with huge color plates and very high quality.

The story was decent and focuses mainly on Japanese mythology and one samurai’s quest to find the Juni Jinsho and help them remember themselves. The Juni Jinsho themselves end up being pretty stereotypical characters who vary in quality; some of them are incredibly interesting and some are forgettable.

The story is decently done, but can be a bit confusing and ambiguous at times. It jumps around some in space and time, but in the end everything came together nicely. The story does lag a bit at some points and, to be honest, it was the awesome art rather than the story that really drove me to keep reading the story.

Overall this book had some amazing art and a decent story. I enjoyed learning some about the Juni Jinsho and enjoyed some of the characters throughout. The art, more than story, was what made this book engaging. I would recommend for fans of Amano’s art and also for fans of the Vampire Hunter D series (the story has a similar tone to it).

Excellent for budget travel

This was my first London travel guide, the one I bought when I had never before been to the UK, when I knew very little of London, and when I was on a student budget. It's been an exceedingly valuable resource ever since I purchased it in 2000. London is notoriously expensive, but this guide manages to seek out restaurants and hotels that don't break the bank. I especially appreciated the specific section on restaurants which are open until the wee hours- essential when arriving late and fighting jet lag. London being a large city of distinct neighborhoods, this guide is organized by neighborhood, and discusses specific hotels and restaurants within each neighborhood.

This book has many virtues, but by far its best section, in my opinion, is the section on sightseeing and entertainment bargains. London has many fine musuems which charge no admission. Its churches offer a wealth of affordable, sometimes free, concerts. This guide doesn't just explain which well-known sights can be enjoyed at a low cost, it also introduced me to a whole range of sights and events I didn't know existed.

I've been to London a number of times since my first trip, but I still reach for this guide. A very valuable resource.

Good mixture of science and application

This is a book for a reader who is comfortable with the basics of signal processing and artificial intelligence. That reader will be rewarded with wide-ranging and very practical discussions of many problems and the techniques used for each. The volume builds on two earlier ones: Fundamental Media Understanding and Professional Media Understanding (from the same author). Together, they provide a broad yet deep introduction into multimedia content analysis. However, this book is also interesting in its own right. The role of human similarity perception for proper machine classification is handled here as in no other book that I know. I strongly agree with many of the statements and descriptions that the author makes.

clear, short, informative

This has my highest recommendation. It is a welcome literary resource for the information retrieval community that fills a gap in the computer science curriculum that has widened significantly in recent years. The book is well written: The leading example is used throughout the entire book and the author clarifies without obfuscating. Furthermore, don't let the size of this book fool you. It is packed with useful information and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about media processing and content understanding. I have started recommending it for all the graduate students in my lab.

This is the best work on the matter that I've ever read. Despite its scientific orientation, it really is a book about the practicalities of computation. I especially enjoyed the chapters on human perception and psychophysics: They bridge the gap from psychological theory to the engineering application. Highly recommended!

A dense introduction to coherence in linguistics

I bought this book because it was the required text for a Masters-level university course. If you are reading this, it is likely that you are in the same situation and that you probably don't have any choice in terms of your purchasing options.

I found the book to be very "dense". It was not an easy read. This was probably due more to the nature of the book's material than to the way it was written, but at times I did feel that Kennedy had left out important details in his explanations that made comprehension for a beginner linguistics learner difficult. During my course, my professor frequently noted errors in the text and suggested alternative interpretations of some of the material. There is some flexibility in the field of linguistics in terms of interpretation, but I feel that Kennedy might have chosen material that was simpler and less open to various interpretations, given that this book is meant to be a primer. I would expect a second edition of the book to deal with some of these issues.

I have found that I have used the book as a reference on some occasions, but not as frequently as I refer to Longman Student Grammar of Spoken and Written English (Biber, Conrad and Leech). I would recommend the Longman book as a first purchase for someone seeking a reference book.
