A dense introduction to coherence in linguistics

I bought this book because it was the required text for a Masters-level university course. If you are reading this, it is likely that you are in the same situation and that you probably don't have any choice in terms of your purchasing options.
I found the book to be very "dense". It was not an easy read. This was probably due more to the nature of the book's material than to the way it was written, but at times I did feel that Kennedy had left out important details in his explanations that made comprehension for a beginner linguistics learner difficult. During my course, my professor frequently noted errors in the text and suggested alternative interpretations of some of the material. There is some flexibility in the field of linguistics in terms of interpretation, but I feel that Kennedy might have chosen material that was simpler and less open to various interpretations, given that this book is meant to be a primer. I would expect a second edition of the book to deal with some of these issues.
I have found that I have used the book as a reference on some occasions, but not as frequently as I refer to Longman Student Grammar of Spoken and Written English (Biber, Conrad and Leech). I would recommend the Longman book as a first purchase for someone seeking a reference book.
