About the Author
Dr. Flumerfelt is an Associate Professor in Organizational Leadership in the School of Education and Human Services at Oakland University, Rochester, Michigan, USA. She is also an Endowed Professor of Lean and the Director of Lean Thinking for Schools at The Pawley Lean Institute at Oakland University. In this capacity, she has pioneered an initiative, Lean Thinking for Schools, where she conducts research and provides basic information seminars to high level transformation training. Dr. Flumerfelt is owner of Charactership Lean Publishing and Charactership Lean Consulting. She writes, speaks and trains widely on the topics of lean, organizational development, management practices, leadership development and systems thinking.

New thinking applications for schools

Books borne out of frustration and a desire to help schools are always worth a read and this is no exception. It takes schools on an uneasy journey and this is always difficult for schools that tend towards high compliance within a wasteful system that doesn't work. The result of such high external command and control is a mechanistic / industrial style school as an organisation, one that tinkers ever onward unable to adequately question why it does what it does in the way that it does. Teachers and school leaders are great people but the received management culture they use and the preparatory training they receive needs review and Shannon Flumerfelt provides a more than useful lean theory guide to school improvement. This book invites schools to constantly question how they approach tasks and why, besides giving a good practical foundation to lean thinking. It is another important piece of the change jigsaw. The challenge of all journeys is the guide book in use and this is a good one. Using practical examples, it walks schools through lean ideas and invites schools to reflect and look again in a different way and this makes it unaccepting of the current compliance culture.
