Amazon.com Review
Sixteen-year-old Ethan Roberts has more to worry about than his lackluster grades. As one of the Named, he is charged with secretly protecting history from the Order of Chaos--an evil group that seeks to alter the past to achieve ultimate power in the present. Ethan is given orders to train his first apprentice, 15-year-old Isabel Becket, in a few short weeks as his growing nightmares soon make it apparent that trouble is brewing on a cosmic scale. The two are helped by Arkarain--Ethan's violet-eyed, blue-haired, 600-year-old mentor--and their secret powers. Isabel is a healer. Ethan is a master of illusion. Their stories evolve in rotating chapters, each told in a similar first-person point of view that makes chapter transitions disorienting at times. But The Named is at its strongest when school and parents fade. Its imagined settings are a pleasure, from the booby-trapped catacombs that house the Prophecy that was written before time to the Citadel--a way-station to the past--with its wildly decorated rooms. Ethan and Isabel's missions to Medieval England and colonial America are also a thrill, indicating that the adventures detailed in this book are just the beginning for this duo. (Ages 10 and older) --D.J. Morel
From Publishers Weekly
Magic blooms in Angel Falls, the setting of this promising launch to Curley's (Old Magic) time travel trilogy. At the edge of a national forest, where two worlds co-exist, 16-year-old Ethan Roberts guards time or, more specifically, history ("My job is to make sure it all happens the way it's supposed to, the way it already did"). As one of the Named, a Guardian of Time, he has been doing this since age four, not long after his 10-year-old sister, Sera, was killed. Her murderer, an evil half-faced monster, Marduke, is an Order of Chaos minion who wishes to alter the past in order to change the future-and to avenge his own losses. As the novel opens, Ethan is given an Apprentice to train, 15-year-old Isabel Becket, younger sister of his ex-best friend. With the help of Arkarian, a 600-year-old Guardian who lives deep inside the mountain, Isabel quickly takes to the apprenticeship, and her power to heal strengthens. But the forces of good and evil are headed for a Final Conflict foreseen by the Prophecy found in Veridian, the ancient city hidden deep under Angel Falls. No machine is required for time travel here; a strange "sleep" is the conduit between worlds past and present. Told in convincing alternating chapters by Isabel and Ethan, the novel reveals a mystery, the clues to which unfold via the duo's trip back in time to John of Gaunt (during the reign of Richard II) and details of Sera's death. Readers will likely be swept up by the ever-growing complications and want to return for the series' next installments. Ages 10-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7-10-Ethan, 16, belongs to the Guard, a secret group of humans who use paranormal powers to protect the Earth against the Order of Chaos. While Chaos tries to change the course of history, the Guards travel back in time to thwart their schemes. Isabel's healing powers bring her to the Guard's attention, and Ethan is assigned to be her trainer. The two engage in some dangerous time-traveling assignments, which lead to an ultimate battle between the two opposing forces. The plot ends up involving many others from Ethan's town, including his teacher, his father, his best friend, and his long-dead sister. The narrative alternates between Ethan and Isabel, and his earnest and sometimes-arrogant manner is balanced by her more casual style. This is all fairly lively, with a premise that's easy to follow and some involving action scenes and character dynamics. The time-travel adventures lack a true sense of immediacy, though, especially when compared to the more gripping scenes involving Marduke, the horrible soldier of Chaos. The identity of a mysterious masked female will be easy for readers to guess. Despite a few slow spots, however, the author keeps things moving smoothly toward the climax. While the anticipated battle involving Ethan's father and Marduke settles the main conflict in a satisfying way, some unresolved plot threads set the stage for a sequel.

Narnia and Harry Potter fans will enjoy this series. It was easy to read and a great escape from the "real world". I just really loved this book, and can't wait for the next 2 to come in the mail! Well written, too.

The most incredible book

This book and the series is the most intriguing, wonderfully written book I've read. It will take you to another place and time. I recommended it to my daughter and she read all three books 2 times and then passed it on to her friends. They all loved the books too! We keep talking about how well it was written and the orginality of the plot. I highly recommend this series: The Named, The Dark, and The Key.

Wowzers.. I'm reading this again.

Why can't every book in this world be as exciting and suspenseful as this book!!?? It just makes me want to cry!!! I absolutely loved this book. The book is about a group of teens who try to protect the present by going through the past inorder to fend off people in an organization that tries to destroy the past. The organization tries to kill someone that would effect the present (you might recognize the people they hunt in your history books). The book juggles through two main chracters chapter by chapter. One, Ethan, who is really the the main chracter in the book tries to go after the monster that killed his sister. The other Isabel is a trainee in the guardians of time who Ethan must train. The Guardians of Time is the organization that must protect the past from the villians. Pretty much the entire book is exciting with some new event coming up what seems like every few pages as you read on. Your guranteed not to be bored with this so what are you waiting for? Tired of reading crappy boring books with no interesting plot? Buy this if you are (espicially for young adults).
