The experiences of a city girl thrust into a very remote part of the world in Papua New Guinea. Focusing primarily on her first year, Sherry tells the story with candor and humor in a way that allows the reader to easily identify with and learn from her experiences. Sherry's initial reactions to the family's outhouse were causing her much anxiety which was fast becoming debilitating. Below is a description she gives of the outhouse that appears in the book: "Others began clearing a path to our liklik house (an outhouse). I could see that the outhouse was perched on the edge of the back side of the very mountain that we had just climbed up, and I prayed fervently that I wouldn't have to spend too much time in there. I noted with relief that each family's house had its own outhouse nearby, which meant that ours would be for our family's private use. The liklik house was leaning slightly, but at least it had a black plastic curtain that would give us a degree of privacy. Pieces of plastic were nailed to different parts of the woven walls to cover some of the larger holes. The people proudly showed us how they had sawed an old oil can in half and then cut a hole in the top so that we would have a toilet seat. I began to shoot up prayers right and left: Lord, give me strength, perseverance, and the grace to maintain a sense of humor in all of this. We found out later that the people had burned the oil can (our toilet seat) to sanitize it. For quite a while, the soot from the can left a bull's eye on our backsides."

About the Author
Sherry Day has been a missionary since 1987, serving alongside her husband Bill in Papua New Guinea for three-and-a-half years, Belize for nine years, and now in the United States where they work with foreign nationals using ESL (English as a Second Language) as their primary evangelistic tool. She is a charter member of her sending church, Surfside Presbyterian (PCA), in Surfside Beach, South Carolina. She loves to disciple and equip younger women, staying involved in several ministries that allow her to do so. Sherry has two biological sons, four step-sons, four adopted Belizean children, several grandchildren, and one great grandchild. She currently resides in Surfside Beach, SC with her husband and family.

The Outhouse is a test of Faith

This book, with its eye catching title, is a heartwarming story of the life of a godly missionary woman as she works through the challenges to her faith through three and a half years in a remote village of Papua New Guinea.
I loved the way she described the extraordinary tests of faith that explode with excitement as the power of God leads her every step of the way.
Seeing how God enabled her to overcome the obstacles every missionary faces will strengthen your faith to work where God has called you.
This book will surely be a blessing to your heart.

Lessons Learned From an Outhouse

I've always felt that I'd like to go on a mission trip to a remote village in Guatemala or Nicaragua. When I mentioned this to my husband a few years ago, he laughed and said, "You DO know that you wouldn't be staying at the Ritz, right?"
Sherry Day brings us a vivid dose of missionary reality in this book. Dealing with harsh weather conditions, rudimentary housing, and scarcity of normal every day "stuff" that we innocently take for granted, she chronicles the details of her family's missionary training and assignment in the isolated location of Papua New Guinea.
Her story emphasizes the primitive conditions and assures us that there is nothing glamorous about living in a structure that is essentially a shack, and the only restroom facility being an outhouse that was precariously positioned on the side of a hill.
In spite of all of the challenges, Sherry and her family knew that bringing the love and Word of God and the message of Christ to these people was worth all of the sacrifice and inconvenience. They had a Higher calling, and no tilted outhouse would stand in the way of their mission.
God repeatedly showed them, through the success of their work and the changing hearts of the people, why they had been brought to this distant location.
I hope that Sherry Day continues writing and shares her stories of working in the mission field of Belize!
